The road upto Bareilly was generally good and but bad in a few patches. However, Bareilly to Lalkuan was a different story altogether. I believe there is a bypass outside of Bareilly but I couldn’t find it so I had to go through the city. If someone gets to know of the location of the bypass do inform. The number of trucks have to be seen to be believed. Coupled with bad roads it’s definitely a slow track. There’s some kinda factory before Lalkuan and trucks are lined up on both sides of the road. Where there are trucks, there are traffic jams and coupled with atrocious truck drivers the experience is tough. There is also extensive construction work on this sector.
The road improves dramatically from Lalkuan. A stop is advised before the climb from Kathghodham to Nainital. The Drive from this point on is smooth cos the roads are very good, maintained well and aren’t as steep as people would have you believe.

The rule says that Schengen Visa should be sought from the country which you visit for the main business. Rule of thumb is, the country where you plan to stay for maximum period of time should be the one to issue you the Schengen. Maximum number of days rule, however, may not hold good in some cases, e.g. if you intent to spend max time in the country which is not of your main business.
In our case, we approached Czech Embassy for the visa, since we were to spend maximum period (about 6 days) there.
Schengen Visa regime has also altered the procedure for entry into EU zone. For instance, since we took a FINNAIR flight, we changed flight at Helsinki. Now, after landing at Helsinki Airport, we shifted into ‘EU Zone’ part of the terminal. So, it was here in Helsinki that we underwent immigration/custom checks. Thereafter, once in EU part, all flights within EU were like domestic flights, despite flying from one country to the next.

This temple is considered in a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built in 7th century. It is one of the oldest South Indian temples built in Dravidian style. The complex spreads out over a square platform, and comprises three temples, of which two are east and west facing Shiva temples, and the third a Vishnu shrine in the center. The temple has vast open are at the western side. Rows of Nandi form the perimeter wall for this temple. The Shore temple is the lone survivor out of seven such temples , the rest having fallen to the ravages of sea.

With all the theoretical knowledge collected through blogs, we had few recommended names for our stay. We started having a look on hotels. First and the very pleasing one was MT- Mountain Trail. Ambiance/view here was awesome. After discussing about the tariffs we moved on to other hotels. We were more concerned for a captivating view rather than the tariffs. We went ahead to few more lodges along with PWD Guest house. But, we had already lost our hearts to MT. So we called back the manager and asked him to book 2 rooms for us.
We parked our car near the entrance of Mukteshwar temple and started taking a walk towards the main tourist attraction point “Chauli ki jali”. After putting in few efforts in climbing the rocks we finally reached on the top of the cliff. The cliff gave a splendid panoramic view of snow-white Himalayan ranges. Captured the “Orange- setting Sun”, did some archery. As it was getting late and the temperature started dropping with Sun, instead of going for Rock climbing we opted to just give a pose :)

रास्ते में हम लोग लोग थोड़ी देर रुद्रप्रयाग में रुके और फिर चल दिए श्रीनगर की ओर. श्रीनगर पहुँचते पहुँचते हमें काफी देर हो चुकी थी और आज रात इससे आगे जाने का कोई साधन नहीं दिख रहा था. कोई जीप या बस मिलने की तो संभावना बिलकुल भी नहीं थी क्योंकि यहाँ हिमाचल की तरह रात को बसें नहीं चलती. ऐसे में हमारे चालक साब ने हमें रात श्रीनगर में ही बिताने का सुझाव दिया और हमें रात गुजारने का एक ठिकाना भी दिखाया. हमने ठिकाना तो देख लिया पर अब किसी का भी यहाँ रुकने का मन नहीं था और सब जल्द से जल्द घर पहुँचना चाहते थे. उत्तरांचल में वैसे तो रात को कोई वाहन नहीं चलते पर सब्ज़ी फल आदि रसद पहुँचाने वाले ट्रकों की आवाजाही रात भर चालू रहती है, सोचा क्यों ना इसे ही आजमाया जाए. आज शायद किस्मत हम पर मेहरबान थी, थोडा पूछ्तात करने पर ही हमें एक ट्रक मिल गया जो हरिद्वार तक जा रहा था. ट्रक चलने में अभी लगभग आधा घंटा बाकी था और सुबह सिर्फ आश्रम में ही भोजन किया था इसलिए एक ढाबे पर जाकर थोड़ी पेट पूजा की गई.
ट्रक पर वापस लौटे तो देखा की चालक के साथ वाली सीट पर पहले ही दो लोग बैठे हुए थे. ऐसे में वहाँ हम तीनों का एक साथ बैठना संभव और सुरक्षित नहीं था. इसलिए दोनों की बुरी हालत देखकर मैं ट्रक के पीछे चला गया जहाँ कुछ अन्य लोग पहले से ही लेटे थे. इस ट्रक के ऊपर एक बरसातीनुमा दरी थी जो शायद सब्जियों को धूल और बारिश से बचाने के लिए डाली गयी थी और नीचे खाली प्लास्टिक के डब्बे रखे हुए थे जिनमे सब्जियाँ रखी जाती हैं. इन्ही हिलते डुलते प्लास्टिक के डब्बों के ऊपर हम सभी मुसाफ़िर लेटे हुए थे. ट्रक चलने पर कुछ समय तो बड़ा मजा आया पर जैसे जैसे रात गहराती गयी और नींद आने लगी तो इन हिलते हुए डब्बों पर सोना बड़ा दुखदायी लग रहा था क्योंकि एक तो ये डब्बे आपस में टकराकर हिल रहे थे और टेढ़े मेढ़े होने की वजह से चुभ भी रहे थे. खैर मेरे लिए तो ये सब रोमांच था, लेकिन रोमांच धीरे धीरे बढ़ने लगा जब इन्द्रदेव अर्धरात्रि में जागे और हम पर जमकर मेहरबान हुए. तिरछी पड़ती हुई मोटी मोटी बारिश की बूँदे हमारे ऊपर एक शॉवर की तरह पड़ रही थी जो एक मंद मंद शीतल रात को एक बर्फ़ीली सी महसूस होने वाली रात में बदलने के लिए काफी थी. ऐसे में ऊपर रखी हुई दरी ने ठण्ड से तो नहीं पर भीगने से तो बचा ही लिया. ठण्ड में किटकिटाते हुए, बिना सोये जैसे तैसे करीब चार बजे के आस पास ट्रक चालक ने हमें हरिद्वार में एक सुनसान मोड़ पर उतार दिया. जितना दर्द मेरे शरीर में उस ट्रक में सवारी करते हुए हुआ उतना पूरी यात्रा कहीं नहीं हुआ, शरीर इतना अकड़ गया था कि ट्रक से बाहर निकलने के लिए भी हिम्मत जुटानी पड़ रही थी. ठण्ड के मारे बुरा हाल था, सुनसान गलियों से होकर गुजरते हुए हम लोग बस स्टेशन की ओर बढ़ने लगे. ऐसे में रास्ते में एक चाय का ठेला देखकर चेहरे पर कुछ ख़ुशी आयी, भाईसाब के हाथ की गर्मागरम चाय और बंद खाकर शरीर में कुछ ऊर्जा आई. फिर तो बस जल्दी जल्दी कदम बढ़ाते हुए हरिद्वार बस स्टेशन पहुँचकर, दिल्ली की बस पकड़ी तो लगभग दस या ग्यारह बजे तक दिल्ली पहुँच कर ही राहत की साँस ली. यात्रा समाप्त!

इस गाड़ी का तकनीकी नाम है GLK21 ! वाह, बड़ाई सोणा नाम है! सन् 1924 के दिनों के तो इंसान भी आज कल मुश्किल से ही मिलते हैं, ये बेचारी तो कार है। वर्ष 2000 के आस-पास मेवाड़ घराने के मन में ये खयाल आया कि हम अपनी कारों की एक प्रदर्शनी क्यूं ना लगा दें। कम से कम प्रवेश टिकट के पैसों से ड्राइवर की तनखाह तो निकलेगी! तो फिर यह खयाल भी हाथ के हाथ आया कि कार देखने के लिये लोग तो तब आयेंगे जब कार बढ़िया हालत में हों । ऐसे में अपने जीवन के फाइनल बसंत देख रही इस कार को पुनः युवा बनाने का अभियान शुरु हुआ। Hofmanns of Henley, UK की राय ली गई और उनके तकनीकी निर्देशन में गाड़ी के एक-एक अंग का प्रत्यारोपण शुरु हुआ। गाड़ी के पहिये न्यू ज़ीलेंड से मंगाये गये। गीयर बक्से की मरम्मत के लिये इंग्लैंड की उसी कंपनी के इंजीनियर आये जिन्होंने इसे बनाने की ज़ुर्रत की थी। यह कुछ ऐसा ही था कि शादी के स्वर्णजयंती वर्ष में कोई व्यक्ति अपने श्वसुर को पत्र लिख कर कहे कि आपकी सत्तर साल की बिटिया का ब्लड transfusion होना है, जरा आकर सहायता करें। जैसे श्वसुर अपने दामाद को “ना” नहीं कर पाते ऐसे ही Hofmanns of Henley कंपनी के श्रीयुत् ग्राहम ने भी मना नहीं किया और गाड़ी के रेडियेटर और गीयर बाक्स को बिल्कुल नये जैसा बना कर दे दिया। धन्य हैं मेवाड़ के महाराणा और धन्य हैं इंग्लैंड के इंजीनियर ! आज ये गाड़ी उदयपुर की सड़कों पर पूरी शान से दौड़ती है। आपको शायद मालूम हो कि रॉल्स-रॉयस कार की सबसे बड़ी पहचान उसका रेडियेटर ही होती है जिसका डिज़ाइन आज तक भी नहीं बदला। O & M विज्ञापन एजेंसी के मालिक ने एक बार लिखा था कि इस गाड़ी को जब बनाया जाता है तो इसकी बॉडी पर stethescope लगा-लगा कर देखा जाता है कि इसमें कहीं कोई आवाज़ तो नहीं आ रही है! पांच बार प्राइमर और नौ बार पेंट का कोट चढ़ाया जाता है, अन्दर कहां, क्या, कैसे चाहिये – यह सब आपकी फर्माइश के हिसाब से बनाया जाता है। ऐसा नहीं कि जो कंपनी वालों को पसन्द आया, लगा दिया। इतना ही नहीं, गाड़ी की हैड लाइट के एंगिल, direction, focus वगैरा सारे समायोजन ड्राइवर अपने आस-पास लगाये गये लीवर से ही कर सकता था। जे हुई ना कुछ बात !

After about two and a half hours we reached Reckong Peo,or Peo, as it is popularly known. Peo is situated at an altitude of around 2200 metres above sea level and is at the base of the Kinner Kailash massif. From here, Kalpa was a short 20 minute drive and by lunch time we reached Kalpa. Our plan was to halt at the PWD rest house, which turned out to be a cottage with an excellent view of the mountains. Staying in Kalpa can be compared to living in the lap of nature. Overlooking the Kinner Kailash range, this is one of the most picturesque hill stations one can ever visit. This quaint town was once the headquarters of Kinnaur district before it was replaced by Reckong Peo. The collector’s office has now been taken over by the HP Irrigation Department while the old SP office is now a small police outpost. The old building of the District Hospital is visible behind the new building of a recently constructed Primary Health Centre. From Kalpa, one can spot the famous Shiva Linga, nestled in the middle of the Kinner Kailash massif. It is a 2 day trek from Kalpa for the strong and sturdy.

There was a stretch of over 5 kms with heavy traffic jam for a brief half an hour well into the middle of our journey just before we reached Roorkee. We had no inkling as to what cause the whole furore. But then 1 hour of slow snail-pace driving and we came to the action point. And almost all of a sudden, we realized we were driving into what seemed like a muddy pond. A lot of on-lookers were standing in higher and safer grounds on both sides of the road. And they were hooked on to the passing vehicles enjoying the drivers’ and passengers’ consternation in the hope of experiencing the cruel enjoyment of seeing a water-logged stranded car with helpless passengers inside. At least 50 odd two-wheelers were seen tugging along their vehicles wading through waist-deep mud and slosh with little children in festive clothes sloshing and pushing the two wheelers from the back, yelling and cheering each other.

उपर के नज़ारों ने शरीर को तरो ताज़ा कर दिया था, इसलिए उतरते वक्त ज़्यादा समय नही लगा और उतरते ही पैदल यात्रा आरंभ. कुछ एक किलोमीटर ही चले थे कि दोस्तों को थकान लगने लगी, सोचा चलो जो साधन मिल जाए आगे तक उसी मे चल पड़ेंगे. अब चलते चलते हर एक आगे जाने वाली गाड़ी को हाथ दिखाकर रोकने की कोशिश करते रहे, पर सब बेकार. किस्मत से थोड़ी देर बाद एक ट्रक आता हुआ दिखाई दिया, आधे मन से इसे हाथ दिखाया और ये क्या! ट्रक तो थोड़ा आगे जाकर रुक ही गया था.

You are really spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants in Goa. Besides the beach shacks, where you can sit on the sands and gaze out at the sea, sipping on a drink, while waiting an hour or two for your meal to arrive, there are many restaurants inland which also serve excellent food at very reasonable rates. There is a fusion of East and West, Portugese and Indian, meat and vegetables, which makes Goan cuisine unique. Coconut is used liberally, along with other Indian spices in the cooking. ‘Fish curry rice’ is the most common food and available virtually in every restaurant. The different types of seafood on offer in Goa includes pomfret, kingfish, ladyfish, mackerel, tuna, shark, crab, prawn, lobster, squid and mussels. Chicken, pork, mutton and beef dishes are also on offer at all the restaurants, cooked in the popular Goan flavours such as vindaloo, balchao, recheado, xhacuti and caldin.
We had already planned that we would include at least one meal out at a shack or restaurant in our daily sight-seeing itinerary. One precaution we always took was to carry our own drinking water if we did not want to order a drink, or pay for a bottle of branded mineral water.
