A couple of days away from the madness of the cities, away from what some of us call life, are always welcome. Mountains are such heavens of silence and solitude. And when you get back from this heaven, you come away feeling saner, rejuvenated. You come back a better one…

There is nothing extraordinary about Birthi, at least on the face of it. It is a tiny village, with couple of shops on road and the KMVN guesthouse perched atop a hill, right on the main road. However, what breaks the silence and the dullness is the mighty roar of a waterfall, called Birthi Falls. This is what makes Birthi fall on the tourist map and makes it really a place worth visiting.

उदयपुर और माउंट आबू घूमने चलें?

अंततः वह क्षण भी आया जब उस प्रतीक्षालय की दीवारों पर लगे हुए इलेक्ट्रॉनिक डिस्प्ले बोर्ड पर हमारी फ्लाइट का ज़िक्र आया और सभी यात्रियों को बस में बैठने हेतु उद्‌घोषणा की गई। पत्नी ने कहा कि बस की क्या जरूरत है, पैदल ही चलते हैं तो उसके जीजाजी ने कहा कि चिंता ना करै ! टिकट नहीं लगता। मैं एयरपोर्ट की बस में बैठते ही कैमरा लेकर ठीक ऐसे ही एलर्ट हो गया जैसे बॉर्डर पर हमारे वीर जवान सन्नद्ध रहते हैं। दो – तीन मिनट की उस यात्रा में वायुयान तक पहुंचने तक भी बीस-तीस फोटो खींच डालीं!

जब अपने वायुयान के आगे पहुंचे तो बड़ी निराशा हुई! बहुत छोटा सा (सिर्फ 38 सीटर) जहाज था वह भी सफेद पुता हुआ। मुझे लगा कि मैं छः फुटा जवान इसमें कैसे खड़ा हो पाउंगा ! सिर झुका कर बैठना पड़ेगा! एयर डैक्कन एयरलाइंस के इस विमान में, जिसका दिल्ली से उदयपुर तक का हमने सिर्फ 1201 रुपये किराया अदा किया था, हम अन्दर प्रविष्ट हुए तो ऐसा नहीं लगा कि सिर झुका कर चलना पड़ रहा है। सिर्फ बाहर से ही ऐसा लग रहा था कि जहाज में घुस नहीं पाउंगा। खैर अन्दर पहुंच कर अपनी सीटें संभाल लीं। मुझे खिड़की वाली सीट चाहिये थी सो किसी ने कोई आपत्ति दर्ज़ नहीं की। अन्दर सब कुछ साफ-सुथरा था। एयरहोस्टेस भी ठीक-ठाक थी। यात्रा के दौरान सुरक्षा इंतज़ामों का परिचय देने की औपचारिकता का उसने एक मिनट से भी कम समय में निर्वहन कर दिया। सच तो यह है कि कोई भी एयरलाइंस, यात्रा के शुभारंभ के समय दुर्घटना, एमरजेंसी, अग्नि शमन जैसे विषय पर बात करके यात्रियों को आतंकित नहीं करना चाहती हैं पर चूंकि emergency procedures के बारे में यात्रियों को बताना कानूनन जरूरी है, अतः इसे मात्र एक औपचारिकता के रूप में फटाफट निबटा दिया जाता है। यात्रियों को समझ कुछ भी नहीं आता कि किस बटन को दबाने से ऑक्सीज़न मास्क रिलीज़ होगा और उसे कैसे अपने नाक पर फिट करना है। एमरजेंसी लैंडिंग की स्थिति में क्या-क्या करना है और कैसे – कैसे करना है। अगर कभी दुर्घटना की स्थिति बनती है तो यात्रियों में हाहाकार मच जाता है, वह निस्सहाय, निरुपाय रहते हैं, कुछ समझ नहीं पाते कि क्या करें और क्या न करें! मेरे विचार से इसका कोई न कोई मध्यमार्ग निकाला जाना चाहिये। अस्तु !

कुछ ही क्षणों में हमारे पायलट महोदय ने प्रवेश किया और बिना हमारा अभिनन्दन किये ही कॉकपिट में चले गये। उनके पीछे – पीछे एयरहोस्टेस भी चली गई पर जल्दी ही वापस आ गई और हमें अपनी अपनी बैल्ट कसने के निर्देश दिये। मैने अपनी पैंट की बैल्ट और कस ली तो श्रीमती जी ने कहा कि सीट की बैल्ट कसो, पैंट की नहीं ! अपनी ही नहीं, मेरी सीट की भी। मैने एयरहोस्टेस को इशारा किया और कहा कि मेरी सीट की बैल्ट कस दे। (सिर्फ 1201 रुपये दिये हैं तो उससे क्या? आखिर हैं तो हम वायुयान के यात्री ही ! एयरहोस्टेस पर इतना अधिकार तो बनता ही है!) अब मुझे भी समझ आ गया था कि सीट बैल्ट कैसे कसी जायेगी अतः पत्नी की सीट की भी बैल्ट मैने कस दी। मुझे खिड़की में से अपने जहाज की पंखड़िया घूमती हुई दिखाई दीं, द्वार पहले ही बन्द किये जा चुके थे। एयर स्ट्रिप पर निगाह पड़ी तो पुराना चुटकुला याद आया। “जीतो ने संता से अपनी पहली हवाई यात्रा के दौरान खिड़की से बाहर झांकते हुए कहा कि बंता ठीक कहता था कि हवाई जहाज की खिड़की से झांक कर देखो तो जमीन पर चलते हुए लोग बिल्कुल चींटियों जैसे लगते हैं! संता ने जीतो को झिड़का, “अरी बुद्धू ! ये चींटियां ही हैं, अभी जहाज उड़ा ही कहां है!” चलो खैर !

A Tale of Two Temples

The Bala Balaji temple is a standing testimony to the devotion and perseverance of a humble coconut vendor called Ramaswami. Every year, he used to visit Tirupati and place a share of his annual income at the feet of Lord Venkateswara as his offering. In 1966, the priests there refused to place the offerings at the feet of the idol and understandably, Ramaswamy was upset thinking that the rejection was by the Lord himself.

That night, Lord Balaji appeared in Ramaswamy’s dream and told him to build a shrine in his hometown itself. Ramaswamy installed framed photographs of Lord Venkateswara and his consort Padmavati in his shop. He would feed the people who visited his shrine without charging any money. In course of time, the temple attracted hundreds of devotees and Ramaswamy had sufficient funds to build a temple. The construction was completed in 1991 and the idols were installed an consecrated by Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji, a famous Vaishnavite saint.

An Adventurous Trip from DELHI to Haridwar & Rishikesh

It was around 12’o clock in the afternoon we felt tired after a long drive and checked-in at Hari Heritage hotel on the Haridwar Rishikesh Highway. we left for Rishikesh in few hours and stayed in the hotel overnight. After disappointment at Har ki Pauri , Rishikesh was a real delight. Clean and chilled Ganga water flowing in from huge mountains to the plains..We parked out car in parking and had lunch at the famous choti wala restaurant where a Choti wala guy is at the entrance welcoming you. It took around half an hour to reach Rishikesh from Haridwar.

In reality, we returned to our hotel room in Makkah and snatched a little sleep before dawn. After the Fajr prayers, we proceeded to go to Mina, which is about 2 km away. Just ahead of Mina is the “Jamarat” or the place where the three “devils” are located. Before I describe this, let me say that stoning of the three devils is a ritual more to remember and praise Allah than to actually denounce the devils.

The route to Jamarat goes through a tunnel that is over a kilometer long. This tunnel was full of devotees right in the morning; only police and emergency vehicles are allowed to pass (and some motorcycles, which had one Saudi and one pilgrim … a private arrangement where the Saudi earns some quick bucks). We also saw several guys with wheel-chairs for hire; they ferried the willing pilgrims to Mina for 50 Saudi Riyals. However, theirs is an illegal enterprise, and we frequently saw the police blocking them and asking the pilgrims to “disembark”. However, the thing I wish to say is … the road to Mina, and beyond, to the Jamarat, is easily traversed as you are walking with hundreds of others. We went past the tunnel, and via a busy but narrow road, we finally reached Mina.

I was in regular touch with the other doctors whom I had left behind, and at about half past twelve, one of them informed me that Sk. Jamal, the tour operator, had finally sorted out the problem with the police, and that they would all be proceeding shortly directly to the hotel where we were to be lodged for the next few days.

I then caught a cab and went to the hotel, where everyone else was just arriving/settling down. This hotel, grandiosely called the Salman Plaza Hotel, was just a building with sub-standard rooms … the kind that you saw in your salad days! They had allocated one room of about 220 sq. ft. for 11 males! Each of us would get to sleep on a half-width Chinese mattress, with the rest of the space being used to keep our bags and shoes/slippers. The A/C worked okay, as did the fan. The room had a small (read cramped) toilet-cum-bath. I chose my “bed” and lay down almost immediately.

My co-passengers were all as tired as I was; one of my friends brought some food, and invited me to share it with him, which I did. We prayed the Dhuhr prayers, and then went to the Holy Mosque to perform the ARRIVAL circumambulation (7 rounds around the Holy Kaa’ba). I continued after this to also complete 7 lengthwise walks between Safaa and Marwah.

We come across “Nilgiri Coach” as we started walking. The Nilgiri Toy Train journey runs in between Mettupalayam and Ooty hill station. This narrow gauge train covers a distance of 46 kms. The train runs through the plains, plantations and tropical rainforest of the Nilgiri. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005 and be a part of Mountain Railways of Indian World Heritage Site along with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (1999) and the Kalka-Shimla Railway (2008).

Single day venture to Taj

There is a separate line for women there, usually that is longer. And you would have a bunch of touts who would offer you options to by pass the long queue. Totally avoidable. The line moves fast and shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes. 20 bucks per ticket, if you are an Indian citizen and INR 250 for foreign tourists. Also kids up to the age of 15 have free entry.  Do not carry anything except your camera and phone inside. Usually the security would withhold everything else, even my son’s dinosaur toys.

It is usually crowded and stuffed inside the tomb. Do not try to click a pic inside with your mobile. There is an old caretaker who would snatch your phone and throw it outside. Yes. Once you are out and on your way back, at the exit there would be people trying to sell you small mementos of Taj. The fair price is 20 bucks, so don’t get tricked like me. I paid 50 per piece and was superbly excited about my skills to bargain when another kid walked up and offered me the same for 15-20 bucks per piece.

As you enter the fort, you are greeted by this tall minar – Chand Minar. It used to be covered with Persian glazed tiles. Now they have whitewashed it in faded orange colour. You want to strangle the person who ordered this colour. The minar was built by Ahmed Shah II to celebrate the capture of the fort. To approach from the front one has to go through three bastions of fortified walls.

ऐसी मान्यता है कि बाणगंगा (बाण: तीर) में स्नान करने पर, देवी माता पर विश्वास करने वालों के सभी पाप धुल जाते हैं.नदी के किनारे, जिसे चरण पादुका कहा जाता है, देवी मां के पैरों के निशान हैं, जो आज तक उसी तरह विद्यमान हैं.इसके बाद वैष्णो देवी ने अधकावरी के पास गर्भ जून में शरण ली, जहां वे 9 महीनों तक ध्यान-मग्न रहीं और आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान और शक्तियां प्राप्त कीं. भैरव द्वारा उन्हें ढूंढ़ लेने पर उनकी साधना भंग हुई. जब भैरव ने उन्हें मारने की कोशिश की, तो विवश होकर वैष्णो देवी ने महाकाली का रूप लिया. दरबार में पवित्र गुफ़ा के द्वार पर देवी मां प्रकट हुईं. देवी ने ऐसी शक्ति के साथ भैरव का सिर धड़ से अलग किया कि उसकी खोपड़ी पवित्र गुफ़ा से 2.5 कि.मी. की दूरी पर भैरव घाटी नामक स्थान पर जा गिरी.

सुबह सुबह जल्दी सब उठ गए और दूर पहाड़ियों से सूरज देवता के दर्शन करने लगे, सचमुच बड़ा ही मनभावन नज़ारा था। नहा धोकर हमने होटल वाले से आस पास की जगहो के बारे मैं पूछा तो कुछ ढंग का नहीं लगा तो सबने विचार किया के चलो मसूरी चलते हैं, आज रात वहीं रुकेंगे। इसके बाद सबने नाश्ता कर के थोड़ी बहुत फोटोग्राफी करने के बाद प्रस्थान कर दिया। अब हम लोगों की मंज़िल थी यमुना पल और केंपटी फॉल, पहले ही इरादा कर लिया था की टाईगर फॉल का बदला केंपटी फॉल मैं लेंगे। नाश्ता करके तो चले ही थे इसलिए कहीं रुके नहीं॥ रुके सीधा यमुना पल जाकर जब सबको जोरों से भूक की तलब लगी। यमुना पल को पार करते ही किनारे पर दाहिने हाथ पर एक छोटी सी दुकान हैं खाने के बारे मैं यूहीं पूछ लिया तो पता चला के खाना भी मिल जाएगा॥ अब सबको भूख भी ज़ोरों से लगी थी इसलिए मांगा लिया। खाने मैं थाली थी जिसमे दाल, चावल और गोभी की सब्जी थी। और पूछने पर पता चला की मछ्ली की सब्जी भी मिलेगी और वो भी ताज़ा। दुकान के मालिक ने बताया की सीज़न मैं यहाँ पर काफी भीड़ रहती हैं जिसकी वजह से बाकी दुकानें भी खुली रहती हैं, लेकिन अब सब बंद हैं शायद बाद मैं खुल जाये |

वहाँ पर शायद राफ्टिंग भी होती होगी क्यूंकी जगह जगह बोर्ड भी लगे हुये थे। खैर खाना खाया और जब दाम पूछे तो सब दंग रह गए। एक थाली का दाम था 20 रु जिसमे दाल, चावल, गोभी की सब्जी और 4 रोटी। और 1 प्लेट फिश करी सिर्फ 50 रु की कुल मिलकर 200 -250 का खर्चा रहा होगा। जिसमे कोल्ड ड्रिंक और चिप्स वागेरह भी थे। ऐसा स्वादिष्ट खाना और इतने कम दाम में तो शायद हमने पूरे टूर में नहीं खाया। खाने वाले का शुक्रिया अदा करके हम लोग मसूरी की तरफ वापस चल दिये॥ और पहाड़ों की सुंदरता के मज़े लेते रहे। शायद भरे पेट में वो ज्यादा अच्छे लग रहे थे। शाम करीब 3 बजे हम लोग केंपटी फॉल पहुंचे और बिना एक पल गवाएँ दौड़ पड़े फॉल की तरफ, मैं तो अभी 10 दिन पहले भी आया था लेकिन तब फॉल में नहाया नहीं था इसीलिए मुझे सबसे ज्यादा जल्दी थी। 2-3 घंटे तसल्ली से हम सब झरने का आनंद लेते रहे लेकिन जैसे ही शाम बढ्ने लगी हम लोग की ठिठुरन बदने लगी और एक एक करके सब बाहर आ गए॥ अब दूसरा काम था मसूरी पहुँचकर एक अच्छा सा कमरा लेना और इस काम को सोनू बड़िया कर सकता था, क्यूंकी वो भी 2-3 बार मसूरी आ चुका था। मसूरी पहुंचर हमने “दीप होटल “ मैं एक कमरा लिया। होटल काफी अच्छा था, साफ सूथरा और पार्किंग भी थी।
