हरिद्वार और देहरादून का तूफानी दौरा – २

मेरा विचार था कि बुद्धा टैंपिल मेरे 1980 में देहरादून छोड़ देने के बाद अस्तित्व में आया है किन्तु जब मैने भाई से पूछा तो उसने बताया कि पहले ये इतना लोकप्रिय नहीं हुआ करता था अतः हम लोग पहले यहां आया नहीं करते थे। पिछले कुछ वर्षों से, जब से ISBT यहां पास में बनी है और इस क्षेत्र में जनसंख्या भी बढ़ गई और बाज़ार भी बन गये तो लोगों को पता चला कि ऐसा कोई सुन्दर सा मंदिर भी यहां आसपास में है। क्लेमेंटाउन में स्थित इस बौद्ध मठ के बारे बाद में मैने जानने का प्रयास किया तो इसके महत्व की अनुभूति हुई। यह मठ तिब्बत के विश्वविख्यात बौद्ध मठ की प्रतिकृति है और इसकी सबसे बड़ी विशेषता इसके मुख्य भवन की दीवारों पर मौजूद भित्तिचित्र हैं, कलाकृतियां हैं जिनके माध्यम से भगवान बुद्ध के जीवन की अनेकानेक घटनाओं को अंकित किया गया है। (इनका चित्र लेना मना है)। इसका निर्माण वर्ष 1965 में हुआ बताया जाता है। लगभग पचास कलाकार तीन वर्ष तक इन दीवारों पर स्वर्णिम रंग के पेंट से कलाकृतियां बनाते रहे हैं तब जाकर यह कार्य पूरा हुआ। बहुत दूर से ही इस मंदिर का स्तूप दिखाई देता है जो 220 फीट ऊंचा है। यह जापान की वास्तुकला शैली पर आधारित है। इस मुख्य भवन में पांच मंजिलें हैं और हर मंजिल पर भगवान बुद्ध की व अन्य अनेकानेक प्रतिमायें भी स्थापित की गई हैं। यह मानव की स्वभावगत कमजोरी है कि वह जिस कला को देखकर प्रारंभ में चकित रह जाता है, बाद में उसी कला के और भी अगणित नमूने सामने आते रहें तो धीरे-धीरे उसका उत्साह भी कम होता जाता है। बहुत ज्यादा ध्यान से वह हर चीज़ का अध्ययन नहीं कर पाता। पहली मंजिल पर स्थित कलाकृतियों और प्रतिमाओं को देखने में हमने जितना समय लगाया उससे थोड़ा सा ज्यादा समय में हमने बाकी चारों मंजिलें देख लीं ! शायद इसकी एक मुख्य वज़ह ये है कि हम उन सब कलाकृतियों को समझ नहीं पा रहे थे और हमें सब कुछ एक जैसा सा लग रहा था। कोई गाइड यदि वहां होता जो एक-एक चीज़ का महत्व समझाता तो अलग बात होती।

मुख्य मंडप में से निकल कर सीढ़ियां उतर कर लॉन में आये तो बायें ओर भी एक स्तंभ दिखाई दिया। लॉन में एक धर्मचक्र स्थापित किया गया है। आपने तिब्बतियों को अपने हाथ में एक धर्मचक्र लिये हुए और उसे हाथ की हल्के से दी जाने वाली जुंबिश से निरंतर घुमाते हुए देखा होगा। वे पोर्टेबल धर्मचक्र वास्तव में इसी धर्मचक्र की अनुकृतियां हैं। इस स्तूप में लगभग 500 लामा धार्मिक शिक्षा ग्रहण करते हैं। बताया जाता है कि तिब्बत के बाद यह एशिया का सबसे बड़ा स्तूप है।

A Road Trip from Delhi to Kolkata

In an August morning of 1888, Mrs. Bertha Benz driven a distance of 106 Kms with her teenage children to visit her mother. With a maximum speed of 10 mph, it took hours for them to reach the destination and the car broke down several times during the journey. Today that road trip is recorded as the first road trip ever made by the first patented motor car ‘The Benz-Patent Motorwagen’. The car was never meant for that long trip but generated a huge publicity pioneering the journey of the automobile industry. 124 years later sitting in a Volkswagen Polo 1.6, I was driven by none other than curiosity to be a part of the road saga where it tells you stories about the ‘river of life’ and the settlements alongside when a road ends to meet another. For next couple of days I dug deep into the travelogues and road trip forums, spent a couple of sleepless nights in impatience. I recall, that was the only time I studied the map seriously as by then I realized, to make a road trip from Delhi to Kolkata through the great Grand Trunk road you need to spend more time with history than geography !

तो साब! ऐसे बना हमारा हरिद्वार का प्रोग्राम जिसमें मेरा कतई कोई योगदान नहीं था। घर के ताले – कुंडे बन्द कर के हम चारों अपनी बुढ़िया कार में बैठे, रास्ते में सबसे पहले पंपे पर गाड़ी रोकी, पांच सौ रुपल्ली का पैट्रोल गाड़ी को पिलाया, गाड़ी में फूंक भरी (मतलब हवा चैक कराई) और हरिद्वार की दिशा में चल पड़े! मारुति कार में और चाहे कितनी भी बुराइयां हों, पर एक अच्छी बात है! हवा-पानी-पैट्रोल चैक करो और चल पड़ो ! गाड़ी रास्ते में दगा नहीं देती !

चल तो दिये पर कहां ठहरेंगे, कुछ ठिकाना नहीं ! गर्मी के दिन थे, शनिवार था – ऐसे में हरिद्वार में बहुत अधिक भीड़ होती है। नेहा इतनी impulsive कभी नहीं होती कि बिना सोचे – विचारे यूं ही घूमने चल पड़े पर बच्चों की इच्छा के आगे वह भी नत-मस्तक थी! मन में यह बात भी थी कि अगर हरिद्वार में कोई भी सुविधाजनक जगह ठहरने के लिये नहीं मिली तो किसी न किसी रिश्तेदार के घर जाकर पसर जायेंगे! “आपकी बड़ी याद आ रही थी, कल रात आपको सपने में देखा, तब से बड़ी चिन्ता सी हो रही थी ! सोचा, मिल कर आना चाहिये!” अपनी प्यारी बड़ी बहना को छोटी बहिन इतना कह दे तो पर्याप्त है, फिर आवाभगत में कमी हो ही नहीं सकती!

कार ड्राइव करते हुए मुझे अक्सर ऐसे लोगों पर कोफ्त होती है जो ट्रैफिक सैंस का परिचय नहीं देते। मैं यह कह कर कि “इन लोगों को तो गोली मार देनी चाहिये” अपना गुस्सा अभिव्यक्त कर लिया करता हूं! बच्चे मेरी इस आदत से परिचित हैं और उन्होंने अब इसे एक खेल का रूप दे दिया है। जब भी सड़क पर कुछ गलत होता दिखाई देता है तो मेरे कुछ कहने से पहले ही तीनों में से कोई न कोई बोल देता है, “आप शांति से ड्राइव करते रहो! गोली तो इसे हम मार देंगे।” मुझे भी हंसी आ जाती है और गुस्सा काफूर हो जाता है।

The Untouched beauty of Kerala – Athirapally and Vazahal waterfall

We were enjoying our car ride on this wonderful route. Then after one hour or so our driver took a turn and we reached at one beautiful place. The place has beautiful landscape, water bodies, small reservoir and a small tea shop and Restroom. (What I remember the place name as Nature’s Resort (but unfortunately I am unable to find this place on internet). It’s a picturesque spot and one can actually enjoy by going into water as water level is very low here.

स्वर्ण मंदिर – लंगर और रामबाग पैलेस

लंगर से बाहर निकल कर पुनः वही प्रश्नचिह्न सम्मुख आ खड़ा हुआ – “अब क्या?“ अचानक मुझे याद आया कि एक मित्र ने रामबाग समर पैलेस यानि, महाराजा रणजीत सिंह के महल का ज़िक्र किया था और कहा था कि मैं उसे अवश्य देख कर आऊं। रिक्शे वालों से पूछना शुरु किया तो सबने 30 रुपये बताये। मुझे लगा कि अमृतसर के रिक्शे वालों को तीस का आंकड़ा कुछ ज्यादा ही पसन्द है। रामबाग पैलेस चलने के लिये एक रिक्शा कर लिया। स्वर्ण मंदिर में हर किसी को कार सेवा में तन्मयता से लगे हुए देखते देखते, मुझे लग रहा था कि यह रिक्शावाला भी तो इस विशाल समाज के लिये एक अत्यन्त उपयोगी कार सेवा ही कर रहा है। अतः उसके प्रति सम्मान की भावना रखते हुए मैं रिक्शे में ऐसे सिमट कर बैठा जैसे मेरे सिमट कर बैठने मात्र से मेरा 82 किलो वज़न घट कर 60 किलो रह जायेगा। मेरा वज़न घटे या न घटे ये तो वाहेगुरु जी की इच्छा पर निर्भर है, पर मुझे उम्मीद है कि उन्होंने मेरी भावनाओं को तो अवश्य ही समझ लिया होगा।

Trip to Haridwar By Car from Delhi

There are many small but good restaurants are there. We decided one Punjabi Restaurant in front of Jai Gurudev Ashram and enjoyed our meal there. In the evening we went towards local temple and visit Chandi Devi Mandir. We hire Auto which is famous with the name Vikram, as the Auto is from Vikram company. We have to change the second auto from the main raod intersection towards Chandi Devi. Their we have to pay the entrance fee and Cable Car fee. We rach at the Mandir premises from where we have to stand in the line to board the cable car as the Mandir is situated at the top of hill. It was a breath stiopping moment at the top of hill. Akmost the whole Haridwar city and river ganga basin is visible from there. We participated in the evening puja there and fed some chanas to monkey. Here monkeys are very naughty, they snatch the eatable items from the visitors.

After darshan we returned back to Har Ki Pauri and attended Evening Pooja there. Har ki Pauri was very crowded and it was very risky with kids to go near the ghats. So we decided to view the prayer from the foot over bridge and after prayer plan to visit the Ganga river from the close. Evening prayer and the environment were very devotional. Many persons on the foot over bridge start chanting Gangaji Aarti. After end of the prayer much priest start moving towards crowd with Aarti Jyot and every one get a chance to take the arti darshan from the close.

Motorcycle Diaries. Road to Munsiyari…Ride to Binsar

Well, I must share that I have travelled on some very lonely stretches; this was proved to be the scariest of all. Completely dark it was, we brothers rode our bikes non-stop in the only source of lights – the bikes’ headlights! This was a typical forest track, and rains made it all the more difficult to negotiate the ride. We stopped several times to check the signal of the phone – no respite. What made us ride ahead in this pitch dark jungle located upon the mounts in the dead of rainy night was the my belief/experience – people in hills don’t lie! After all, the guard had said that the forest track would end in 13kms and route to Dhaulchhina would emerge!

Bang on right he was! Just as my bike’s meter clocked 13kms, we came out to a neat tarmac. By now, we were completely drenched and shivering. And it didn’t help that there weren’t any signage that could guide us to either left or right. Fortunately, mobile phone’s signals were back and we called the Camp to locate the address.

30minutes later, amidst heavy rains, we arrived at Dhaulchhina, a hamlet where Binsar Eco Camp was located above a hillock.

Lucknow Lights

Two centuries ago when the Nawabs were driving around in their horse drawn buggies they would give way of right to the horse drawn buggy of the fellow Nawab, both on their way to Hazratganj for shopping. This was perfectly normal in the true spirit of Pehle Aap (after you) culture of Lucknow. After all, that was the era of leisure, languidness and laid back, aptly depicted in Satyajit Ray’s ‘Shatranj ke Khiladi’.

Times have definitely changed now. Goons – elected or otherwise – sitting in their Endeavours, with number plates emblazoned with their self-christened designations, pressure horns on full blast, bulldoze their way through the crowded streets. Of course the number plates do not carry registration numbers and the horn has to sound the loudest. Few moments caught in this decibelly deafening din will bring in the worst headache and probably convulsions. Guantanamo Bay authorities could play this cacophonic recording and the Al-Qaeda inmates would start singing like canaries instead of paying royalties to music companies for playing their metal rock.

You are startled and jump off the street when you hear a truck horn, only to see a motorcycle whizz past you. In Punjab, your vehicle needs to be shod with the flashiest alloys. In Lucknow, people get turned on by going sadistic on your ears. It is auditory mayhem on the roads.

धनोल्टी , सहस्त्रधारा ,ऋषिकेश और फिर हरिद्वार

रात की नीरवता मे गंगा की लहरो की तट की पैकडियो से टकराने की आवाज आ रही थी. इसी बीच मेरी श्रीमती जी ढुढती हुई आ गयी. आते ही बोली यहाँ कहाँ लेटे हो, मै बोला क्या करू यहाँ पर ठंडक है इसलिये इन सबके साथ यहीं लेट गया हूँ पर नींद तो आ नही रही है. बोली चलो बस मे ही आरम करना. यहाँ के ठंडे फर्श पर लेटे रहे तो कमर अकड जायगी. अब मुझे लगा, इससे तो अच्छा वापस दिल्ली चलते हैं, यहाँ परेशन होने से क्या फायदा. इतनी रात मे भी कई लोग गंगा नहा रहे थे. मैने गंगा का जल अपने उपर छिड़का और बस मे पहुंचकर जब सबसे वापस दिल्ली चलने के लिये कहा तो कुछ लोग बोले जब इतना परेशान हो ही चुके हैं तो अब कल गंगा नहाकर ही चलेंगे. मैने कहा ठीक है जैसी तुम सबकी मर्जी. बस मे बैठे हुए पता नही कब नींद लग गयी. दिन निकल आने के बाद ही नींद खुली.

अब सभी हर की पोड़ी पर चल दिये. तभी हमारे साथ के मनोज जी हर की पोड़ी के सामने बने धर्मशाला मे दो कमरे तय कर आये. बोले 500-500 रुपये मे मिल रहे हैं लेना है. मैने कहा ले लो भई थोड़ी देर के लिये ही सही बरसात के करण गंगा का पानी मटमैला था कुछ लोग नखरे करने लगे. पर बाकी सभी ने तो गंगा मे ढंग से स्नान किया. . नहा कर तैयार होने मे ही सभी को दस बज गये. अब भी कुछ एक तैयार नही हुए थे, मैने कहा मै तो नाश्ता कर के बस मे बैठने जा रहा हूँ तुम सब लोग भी जल्दी से आ जाओ. जब इतने सारे लोग होते हैं तब सारे अपनी- अपनी मर्जी चलाते हैं. करीब 12 बजे बस मे पहुंचे. अब वापस दिल्ली लौटना था.

हरमंदिर साहब, अकाल तख्त और जलियांवाला बाग दर्शन

घंटाघर के प्रवेश द्वार से पुनः अंदर कदम रखा तो सिक्ख संग्रहालय नज़र आया।  सोचा कि चलो, इसे भी देख लिया जाये।  हॉल में प्रवेश करते ही दाईं ओर ऊपर जाने के लिये सीढ़ियां थीं ।  ऊपर पहुंचा तो लिखा मिला, “फोटो खींचना मना है जी।“ पहले तो बड़े ध्यान से एक – एक चित्र को देखना और उसके नीचे दिये गये विवरण को पढ़ना शुरु किया पर फिर लगा कि इतने शहीदों का वर्णन पढ़ते-पढ़ते मैं भी जल्दी ही शहीदों की लिस्ट में अपना नाम लिखवा लूंगा।  हे भगवान !  इतने शहीद यहां और इनके अलावा उन्नीस सौ के करीब जलियांवाला बाग में!  अब मुझे इस बात का कोई आश्चर्य नहीं हो रहा था कि अमृतसर में हर सड़क का नाम किसी न किसी शहीद के नाम पर ही क्यों है?

शहीदों के चित्र देखते देखते अंतिम कक्ष में पहुंचा तो देखा कि नवीनतम शहीदों की पंक्ति में बेअंत सिंह और सतवंत सिंह के भी बड़े – बड़े तैल चित्र लगे हुए हैं। पहचाने आप?  बेअंत सिंह और सतवंत सिंह वे दोनों अंगरक्षक थे जिन्होंने अंगरक्षक के रूप में प्रधानमंत्री की सुरक्षा की जिम्मेदारी अपने सिर पर लेकर भी निहत्थी प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी की हत्या की थी।  मन में सहसा विद्रोह की भावना ने सर उठाया।  फिर देखा कि एक तैल चित्र और लगा हुआ है जिसमें गोलों – बारूद की मार से क्षत-विक्षत लगभग खंडहर अवस्था में अकाल तख्त का चित्र था।  अकाल तख्त की यह दर्दनाक स्थिति आपरेशन ब्लू स्टार के समय आतंकवादियों को अकाल तख्त से बाहर निकलने के लिये विवश करने के दौरान हुई थी।  एक आम भारतीय की तरह मेरा भी मानना है कि अकाल तख्त की ऐसी कष्टकर, वेदनाजनक स्थिति के लिये यदि भारतीय सेना को दोषी माना जाता है तो वे लोग भी कम से कम उतने ही दोषी अवश्य हैं जिन्होंने भिंडरवाले को अकाल तख्त में छिप कर बैठने और वहां से भारतीय सेना पर वार करने की अनुमति प्रदान की थी।  अकाल तख्त की पवित्रता तो उसी क्षण भंग हो गई थी जब उसमें हथियार, गोले और बारूद लेकर भिंडरवाले और उसके अन्य साथियों ने प्रवेश किया और इस बेपनाह खूबसूरत और पवित्र भवन को शिखंडी की तरह इस्तेमाल किया।  वैसे जो लोग राजनीति की गहराइयों से परिचित हैं उनका कहना है कि भिंडरवाले भी तो कांग्रेस का ही तैयार किया हुआ भस्मासुर था जिसे कांग्रेस ने अकाली दल की काट करने के लिये संत के रूप में सजाया था।  अस्तु !
