Single day venture to Taj

There is a separate line for women there, usually that is longer. And you would have a bunch of touts who would offer you options to by pass the long queue. Totally avoidable. The line moves fast and shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes. 20 bucks per ticket, if you are an Indian citizen and INR 250 for foreign tourists. Also kids up to the age of 15 have free entry. Do not carry anything except your camera and phone inside. Usually the security would withhold everything else, even my son’s dinosaur toys.

It is usually crowded and stuffed inside the tomb. Do not try to click a pic inside with your mobile. There is an old caretaker who would snatch your phone and throw it outside. Yes. Once you are out and on your way back, at the exit there would be people trying to sell you small mementos of Taj. The fair price is 20 bucks, so don’t get tricked like me. I paid 50 per piece and was superbly excited about my skills to bargain when another kid walked up and offered me the same for 15-20 bucks per piece.

The Indomitable Daulatabad Fort, Aurangabad

As you enter the fort, you are greeted by this tall minar – Chand Minar. It used to be covered with Persian glazed tiles. Now they have whitewashed it in faded orange colour. You want to strangle the person who ordered this colour. The minar was built by Ahmed Shah II to celebrate the capture of the fort. To approach from the front one has to go through three bastions of fortified walls.

ऐसी मान्यता है कि बाणगंगा (बाण: तीर) में स्नान करने पर, देवी माता पर विश्वास करने वालों के सभी पाप धुल जाते हैं.नदी के किनारे, जिसे चरण पादुका कहा जाता है, देवी मां के पैरों के निशान हैं, जो आज तक उसी तरह विद्यमान हैं.इसके बाद वैष्णो देवी ने अधकावरी के पास गर्भ जून में शरण ली, जहां वे 9 महीनों तक ध्यान-मग्न रहीं और आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान और शक्तियां प्राप्त कीं. भैरव द्वारा उन्हें ढूंढ़ लेने पर उनकी साधना भंग हुई. जब भैरव ने उन्हें मारने की कोशिश की, तो विवश होकर वैष्णो देवी ने महाकाली का रूप लिया. दरबार में पवित्र गुफ़ा के द्वार पर देवी मां प्रकट हुईं. देवी ने ऐसी शक्ति के साथ भैरव का सिर धड़ से अलग किया कि उसकी खोपड़ी पवित्र गुफ़ा से 2.5 कि.मी. की दूरी पर भैरव घाटी नामक स्थान पर जा गिरी.

सुबह सुबह जल्दी सब उठ गए और दूर पहाड़ियों से सूरज देवता के दर्शन करने लगे, सचमुच बड़ा ही मनभावन नज़ारा था। नहा धोकर हमने होटल वाले से आस पास की जगहो के बारे मैं पूछा तो कुछ ढंग का नहीं लगा तो सबने विचार किया के चलो मसूरी चलते हैं, आज रात वहीं रुकेंगे। इसके बाद सबने नाश्ता कर के थोड़ी बहुत फोटोग्राफी करने के बाद प्रस्थान कर दिया। अब हम लोगों की मंज़िल थी यमुना पल और केंपटी फॉल, पहले ही इरादा कर लिया था की टाईगर फॉल का बदला केंपटी फॉल मैं लेंगे। नाश्ता करके तो चले ही थे इसलिए कहीं रुके नहीं॥ रुके सीधा यमुना पल जाकर जब सबको जोरों से भूक की तलब लगी। यमुना पल को पार करते ही किनारे पर दाहिने हाथ पर एक छोटी सी दुकान हैं खाने के बारे मैं यूहीं पूछ लिया तो पता चला के खाना भी मिल जाएगा॥ अब सबको भूख भी ज़ोरों से लगी थी इसलिए मांगा लिया। खाने मैं थाली थी जिसमे दाल, चावल और गोभी की सब्जी थी। और पूछने पर पता चला की मछ्ली की सब्जी भी मिलेगी और वो भी ताज़ा। दुकान के मालिक ने बताया की सीज़न मैं यहाँ पर काफी भीड़ रहती हैं जिसकी वजह से बाकी दुकानें भी खुली रहती हैं, लेकिन अब सब बंद हैं शायद बाद मैं खुल जाये |

वहाँ पर शायद राफ्टिंग भी होती होगी क्यूंकी जगह जगह बोर्ड भी लगे हुये थे। खैर खाना खाया और जब दाम पूछे तो सब दंग रह गए। एक थाली का दाम था 20 रु जिसमे दाल, चावल, गोभी की सब्जी और 4 रोटी। और 1 प्लेट फिश करी सिर्फ 50 रु की कुल मिलकर 200 -250 का खर्चा रहा होगा। जिसमे कोल्ड ड्रिंक और चिप्स वागेरह भी थे। ऐसा स्वादिष्ट खाना और इतने कम दाम में तो शायद हमने पूरे टूर में नहीं खाया। खाने वाले का शुक्रिया अदा करके हम लोग मसूरी की तरफ वापस चल दिये॥ और पहाड़ों की सुंदरता के मज़े लेते रहे। शायद भरे पेट में वो ज्यादा अच्छे लग रहे थे। शाम करीब 3 बजे हम लोग केंपटी फॉल पहुंचे और बिना एक पल गवाएँ दौड़ पड़े फॉल की तरफ, मैं तो अभी 10 दिन पहले भी आया था लेकिन तब फॉल में नहाया नहीं था इसीलिए मुझे सबसे ज्यादा जल्दी थी। 2-3 घंटे तसल्ली से हम सब झरने का आनंद लेते रहे लेकिन जैसे ही शाम बढ्ने लगी हम लोग की ठिठुरन बदने लगी और एक एक करके सब बाहर आ गए॥ अब दूसरा काम था मसूरी पहुँचकर एक अच्छा सा कमरा लेना और इस काम को सोनू बड़िया कर सकता था, क्यूंकी वो भी 2-3 बार मसूरी आ चुका था। मसूरी पहुंचर हमने “दीप होटल “ मैं एक कमरा लिया। होटल काफी अच्छा था, साफ सूथरा और पार्किंग भी थी।

There is so much to see – age-old photos, long-standing maps, coins from all over the world, documents, local utensils & other items, wind-up gramophones, hand-made saddlebags, wooden bottles, native dresses and attires, hand-crafted shoes…so much that I can’t portray it in words and even if I venture to, I need to write at least 10000 words!

With our hats off to Dr. Pangtey, Nitin and I came back for lunch to the hotel by 2:00pm. En route, we crossed several beautiful living mountain streams – there’s something magical about these streams, indescribable in words. I’ve always been fascinated by them…the mountain-lover in me wants to halt at everyone, wishes to explore the start of each such stream and secretly plans to some day even live next to one such stream!

A Glimpse Of Jaipur

Upon entering the walled city, we were immediately accosted by each and every shopkeeper of each and every shop in the myriad bazaars within. This was annoying enough for us as Indians. It must be downright intimidating for the foreigners.

The shopkeepers aggressive sales pitch were a big put off. Having said that, I could see why Jaipur is called a shoppers paradise. Though most of the wares on offer were touristy tat, there was certainly a huge variety of some rather good tat as well. I succumbed and did not leave without my fair share of purchases though I would have bought a lot more had it not been such a nuisance having to bargain fiercely in every store. Initial prices quoted anywhere were at least 3 to 4 times higher than the final settled amount. The haggling became just too much of an effort and I decided not to buy anything more. The Jaipur traders are geared to sell to the foreign tourist though I doubt that most foreigners would pay such steep prices, they probably drive a much harder bargain than we do. One cannot even walk in peace without being constantly assailed by men beseeching you to enter their shops.

चलो अब चलते हैं मुचुकूंद गुफा, ‘अरे नही यार ये तो बहुत उपर लगता है’ दीपक बोला. ‘अरे नही भाई, पास ही तो है’, मैं बोला. ‘3 किमी तो दूर है भाई, फिर हम लोग वसुधारा नही जा पाएँगे, देख लो’, पुनीत बोला. बात सबको ठीक लगी, हम लोग वसुधारा को नही छोड़ना चाहते थे, गुफ़ाएँ तो सबने देख ही ली थी अब वसुधारा के दर्शन करने को सब बड़े बेकरार थे. इसलिए बिना समय गवाए हम लोग नीचे भीम पुल की ओर बढ़ चले. भीम पुल के पास आकर सबसे पहले एक बड़ी भ्रांति टूटी जो थी ‘सरस्वती के लुप्त हो जाने की’, हमने तो सरस्वती दर्शन से पहले केवल यही सुन रखा था की यह नदी अब विलुप्त हो चुकी है और शायद भूमिगत होकर बहती है.

A Day Trip OF Philly

Philadelphia has lots of statues in the parks and roads most of them of historical figures like Presidents and war heroes specially popular being President Lincoln’s statue on Kelly Drive, I could not take its picture as the bus was moving too fast. But I was able to take picture of the statue of chief justice John Marshall outside the west gate of Franklin Institute. Ever heard of a Judge’s statue in India? If yes please inform me. There is also a controversial statue of the Italian Stallion Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa a must for movie buffs as the story of Rocky series is in Philly. The guides in the buses were very knowledgeable and were telling a lot of stories about not only the city but also some of the controversies going in the city. The controversy around Ricky’s statue was another one.

Makkah – Performing the Hajj pilgrimage

A trip to Makkah normally takes about three hours, give or take. The actual distance from my village to it is about 290 km. This night, though, we took over ten hours to reach Makkah, and over 16 hours to finally reach the hotel rooms where we would all be staying. I would tell you all the sordid details, but suffice it to know that our agent had arranged the whole trip ILLEGALLY … that is, there was no payment made to the Government of Saudi Arabia for performance of a legal journey. We were performing Hajj at a very low cost … the cost would include the transportation to Makkah and the return from it, and the 11-persons-per-room stay in a hotel in Makkah. Food, internal travelling, comforts etc. were EXCLUDED. Of course, the organiser’s huge profit margin was INCLUDED in the 1800 Saudi Riyals per person package!

As we were not official pilgrims, the police stopped our bus at many places. At one spot, we were immediately directed to the opposite side and asked to return to Ta’if, the city from which we had just left; we tried to re-negotiate this barricade, and failed again. Then, in a burst of creativity, one of my co-passengers simply shifted one of the barricades aside and we drove past it, out of sight of the police! Ahead, as night deepened, most of us went off to sleep. The bus plodded on, inch by inch, as it neared Makkah. At the break of dawn, the driver woke us all and asked us to get off the bus, while he tried to get the bus past yet another police barricade. We got off, and walked past the lingering police with hundreds of other pilgrims in a similar predicament. Finding some flat, even ground on the side of the road, we all plopped there to await the bus that would come to pick us up. It was another two hours before it did. In the meantime, night turned into day and the sun climbed up, changing the weather from a balmy, warm one into an uncomfortable, hot one.

My father loved walking, he had a hard job. Railways employees seldom get any holidays as other government people in India. He was the in-charge of train’s maintenance crew who undertook the mechanical and physical repairs of all trains, goods or passenger carriers. Bhatinda is one of the biggest railways establishments in whole world and he walked a lot on his job because each goods train is about a kilometer long and as a part of his job he had to walk around each train at least once; sun or rain, hot or cold, day or night.
We all three brothers love walking. We all brothers went to public schools. Our school was far away and we walked to our school and then college was even farther and we either walked there or took our cycle. One by one we all three brothers immigrated to USA but love of walking stayed in our blood. Even my uncles and cousins love to walk. When we all get together then we take a long walk in the wilderness.

Present temple of Gangotri was built in 18th century, by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa, is located near the spot where the goddess Ganga is said to have first descended on earth from heaven, as an answer to the prayers of King Bhagriath! Gongotri is the highest and most important temple of Goddess Ganga. The origin of Bhagirathi river, Gaumukh glacier is 18 kms from Gangotri and there person can reach only by foot. One can go by horse riding but up to certain point and from there by foot they have to go. Gangotri remains opened from May and get closed on the day of Diwali festival. During winter, Gangotri temple remains closed due to heavy snowfall.

We had information that this year Aurora would be in full swing due to high activities in the sun… My daughter had gifted me a new camera (lumix GF3) so I was ready to see and shoot Aurora this year. One day I woke up at 5, for drinking a glass of water and when I peeped out of my window, I saw a green colored cloud over my garden. I was excited that I was watching Aurora from inside my house. I ran and brought the camera, but by the time I fixed it, the green cloud left and a beautiful blue haze covered the sky.

So first attempt failed. Evening when we were watching our favorite TV serials, suddenly telephone rang and my friend Hilde was on the other side. She told me to go to certain place, If I wished to see Northern Lights. It was a wintery night and temprature was -4, with high winds blowing, but that did not bar us from rushing out. We drove by the downtown, and near the sea and watched the beautiful Reykjavik in night.
