The Great Himachal Circuit – Part 2 : Shimla to Sangla via Sarahan

A very important thing about Himachal, is that people are very cooperative and they are very happy with what they are and have. I am writing this because I tour as well as I interact with people over various places, trying to find the differences in the cultures, way of living etc. This is what travelling is all about. I found Himachal people in the remote of the areas to be very well educated (better than what we are in cities) and well behaved. They are clean by heart and they educate their child to be as clean as them.

Soon it was getting dark and we entered the temple which normally opens up after 7PM. Not everywhere inside the temple are cameras and accessories allowed, but there are lockers where they can be kept. So we put our accessories in the lockers and entered the temple. The Bhimakali Temple at Sarahan is quite big and unique in its own way and own beauty. It looks more like a monastery rather than a temple.

Ghum: So I guess we are on to something. Last month, we had a gentlemen whose wife is a teacher and this month again it repeats. You would now need to tell me more about Shanthi and her teaching and so on.
Venkat: My wife, Shanthi, is also from Tiruppur. She too is a graduate in Commerce. She has two elder sisters and one younger brother, all of whom are married and settled not too far from Tiruppur. In the period before marriage, after completing her under-graduation, she had gone to a kindergarten school nearby her home as a temporary teacher. She was so good at it that the school retained her services permanently. And after marriage, she continues teaching Kindergarten kids in the same school. She has such a natural flair for teaching and she is adored by both the students and their parents. Infact she is more familiar in the neighbourhood than myself. Apart from her teaching skills, Shanthi is a wonderful cook too (her non veg dishes are really tasty).

Ghum: I have left a one big section for the food but lets begin it now. Your profile says that you are a foodie ? Tell us more.
Venkat: Me and my wife both are very fond of Non-Vegetarian food, especially the South Indian Chettinad variety. May be it is because right from our childhoold, there has never been shortage of mutton and chicken items in our households. Every function is incomplete without an exhaustive spread of Non vegetarian items. That is the reason we are avid foodies, who go the extra mile for to satiate our taste buds! But while on travel, we like to explore local cuisines wherever possible. With regards to tips to fellow travellers, I think having “dil chahe” dishes in “dil chahe” quantities(of course health permitting) is an integral part of the joy we derive from travelling.

The Great Himachal Circuit Part 1: Reaching Shimla

In the evening, we started for a small walk up towards the Mall. On the way, The Grand hotel and the Kali Bari are located. So visited all and then finally reached the Mall. We spent around 3 hours in the Mall and Lakkar Bazaar right below the Mall. Took beautiful photographs and had our dinner in a cool restaurant. The Shimla Mall road is a real beauty in the evening, there is no doubt in it.

We got back to our hotel in the same route walking around 9 in the evening. Quickly I called up the cab we booked for the rest of the tour and everything was as per plan. The cab driver was on target for the next day and informed us about the time he would be in.
After this went in for a nice sleep. We had to cover a long and adventurous journey ahead.

अन्नू भाई चला चकराता …पम्म…पम्म…पम्म (भाग- 2 ) रहस्यमई मोइला गुफा

ये सब देखकर हम तो मानो जैसे स्कूल से छुटे, छोटे छोटे बच्चो की तरह दोड़ते भागते , गिरते पड़ते जब उस मंदिर नुमा ढांचे तक पहुचे तो एक बार को तो उसे देखकर हम तीनो सिहर से उठे। वो एक लकड़ी का बना मंदिर ही था पर उसमे न कोई मूर्ति न घंटा , हाँ उसमें इधर उधर किसी जानवर के पुराने हो चुके सिंग , कुछ बर्तन से टंगे हुए थे और एक लड़की का ही बना पुतला दरवाजे से बाहर जो की कोई द्वारपाल सा लग रहा था। मन ही मन उस माहोल और जगह को प्रणाम कर अपने साथ लाये मिनरल वाटर की बोतल से उन्हें जल अर्पण किया और परिकर्मा कर बड़े इत्मिनान से वहां बैठ दूर दूर तक फैली वादियों और शान्ति का मजा लेने लगे। थोड़ी देर बाद सोचा के चलो ताल में नहाते है फिर कुछ खा पीकर गुफाओ को ढूंढ़ेगे।

पानी का ताल जो की थोडा और आगे था जल्दी ही दिखाई दे गया लेकिन वहां पहुँच कर नहाने का सारा प्रोग्राम चोपट हो गया। कारण उसमे पानी तो बहुत था परन्तु एक दम मटियाला। सो सिर्फ उसके साथ फोटो खीच कर ही मन को समझा लिया। अब बारी गुफा ढूंढने की तो लेकिन वहां चारो और दूर दूर तक कोई गुफा तो नहीं अपितु मकेक बंदरो के झुण्ड घूम रहे थे। जो की हम पर इतनी कृपा कर देते थे की हम जिस दिशा में जाते वो वहां से दूर भाग जाते थे। हम तीनो काफी देर अलग अलग होकर ढूंढते रहे पर हमें तो कोई गुफा नहीं दिखी सिर्फ शुरू में आते हुए एक छोटा सा गड्ढा नुमा दिखाई दिया था।

लेह – खर्दुंग ला – हुन्डर (नुब्रा वैली) – लेह – भाग5

अब हरी का दिल तेजी से धड़कने लग गया था। इस बार मैं मज़ाक नहीं कर रहा, सही मे हरी घबरा गया था। वो इंग्लिश मे बोला “टेल हिम टु ड्राइव केयरफुली” Or “आस्क हिम टु स्टॉप एंड यू ड्राइव”। उसकी ये बात सुनकर हम हंसने लगे। इस बार अंकल की छटी इंद्री जाग गई और बोले कि “हरी तू बहुत घबराता है, मनोज भी तो पहली बार आया है वो तो चुप-चाप बैठा है”। अब अंकल को क्या पता की मनोज तो इतना घबराया हुआ था कि मुह से एक शब्द भी नहीं बोल पा रहा था। लेकिन अंकल अपनी चाल मे ही गाड़ी चलाते रहे और हरी भी “खर्दुंग ला” तक इंग्लिश मे कुछ ना कुछ बडबडाता ही रहा। सही बोलूँ तो राहुल और मेरा अच्छा एन्जोयमेंट होता रहा। हम “खर्दुंग ला” टॉप पहुँच गए। हरी ने जल्दी गाड़ी से नीचे उतरने की शिफारिश की और चैन की साँस भरी। अब जाकर बेचारा मुस्कराया था।

बद्रीनाथ – गोबिंद घाट – घाघंरिया (गोबिंद धाम) : भाग 5

जब भगवान विष्णु योग ध्यान मुद्रा में तपस्या में लीन थे तो बहुत ही ज्यादा हिम पात होने लगा। भगवान विष्णु बर्फ में पूरी तरह डूब चुके थे। उनकी इस दशा को देख कर माता लक्ष्मी का ह्रदय द्रवित हो उठा और उन्होंने स्वयं भगवान विष्णु के समीप खड़े हो कर एक बेर(बद्री) के वृक्ष का रूप ले लिया और समस्त हिम को अपने ऊपर सहने लगी। भगवान विष्णु को धुप वर्षा और हिम से बचाने लगी। कई वर्षों बाद जब भगवान् विष्णु ने अपना तप पूर्ण किया तो देखा की माता लक्ष्मी बर्फ से ढकी पड़ी हैं। तो उन्होंने माता लक्ष्मी के तप को देख कर कहा की हे देवी! तुमने भी मेरे ही बराबर तप किया है सो आज से इस धाम पर मुझे तुम्हारे ही साथ पूजा जायेगा। और क्यूंकि तुमने मेरी रक्षा बद्री रूप में की है सो आज से मुझे बद्री के नाथ-बद्रीनाथ के नाम से जाना जायेगा।

Uttarakhand Sojourn – Ride in to the Wilderness (Camping in Deoban)

Sitting there on the green patch overlooking Spider Colony, we felt exactly how a falcon would feel when flying high. For as far as we could see, there were just waves of misty mountains. Paahji and I felt lucky to be living our lives exactly the way we wanted to. On our back was an intimidating rocky wall, behind which lay Deoban.
A kilometer or so up from that place, we started spotting snow on the road side and then, all hell broke loose. The first 20-foot stretch of snow on the road made me really nervous. There were paths through the snow made by what must have been army vehicles, but those paths were strewn with treacherous black ice. Paahji looked nervously at me as I struggled through that stretch. He was slightly better off with his long legs working as outriggers. There was another such stretch in the next corner and then there was another. After a number of snowed stretches, we got to a Y point where the road on the right went to Mundali and the one on the left went to Deoban. We took the left one and as we got closer to Deoban, the quantity of snow on the road kept increasing. Fortunately, the road was not too steep and it was somewhat manageable. Suddenly, Paahji took a left turn and stopped. He asked me where we were heading. The road ahead had two feet of snow for as far as we could see and we definitely couldn’t take our bikes through that. Paahji looked at me with a huge question mark on his face. We got off the bikes and looked around. Wow! What a sight! The place was about 4 kilometers short of Deoban. There was a shallow gorge that slid down to a frozen pond. The slopes were heavily snowed on all sides except for the areas that were getting direct sunlight. There was a nice and flat green patch on the right of the pond where tree-cutting work must have been on till recently. Loads of firewood lay abandoned alongside freshly cut logs.

Day 2 : Kamptee to Jhansi

Start early morning at 5.00 AM and head toward Chhindwara. This section is mix of good and bad stretches. Reached Chhindwara around 7.00 AM, stopped for a fuel refill and headed toward Narsinghpur. At Chhindwara ask for Narsighpur direction, I remember as soon as we cross the railway crossing within Chhindwara town took Left road and head toward Narsinghpur(a small direction board for Narsinghpur is placed at railway crossing which is not visible). I loved this section after Chhindwara. Like good road even single lane road, ghats section, Jungle, a lot of villages on road side. Be careful at Ghats section as usually people drive fast on these types of ghats section. Please check out your speed and same time be very careful from vehicle which is coming from other end. Ghats road end before entering Narsinghpur. Road from Narsinghpur to Babina is good. Careful with diversion, cases where need to drive on wrong direction. Full of heavy trucks. Bypass Sagar and Lalitpur. Keep following Jhansi. Road from Babina to Jhansi is horrible, Need to enter Babina town which is really horrible. Road condition is very bad till Jhansi. A lot of local traffic between Babina and Jhansi. Stretch of around 25 KM. Reached Jhansi around 5.30 PM and took night halt. During night while roaming in Jhansi got the route map to exist Jhansi and follow Gwalior. Total drive time = 12 Hrs. KM drive = Approx 640 KM, toll around = Rs 200

Kedarnath

Kedarnath can be accessed by foot , mule , palki or kandi. It could be visited by Helicopter too which is available from Agastyamuni or Phata.

Those who visited Kedarnath by Helicopter , they miss the natural beauty of the valley and the trekking. They miss the opportunity of visiting Gauri kund too.

The journey of first one km was terribly irritating because the way was overcrowded and too much stinking because of the horses. Couple of kms away we found it ok. After sometime we started feeling tired but kept on walking slowly and taking rest in every 200-300 meters for couple of seconds to regain the energy.

गौरीकुंड – चोपटा – जोशीमठ – बद्रीनाथ (भाग 4)

कोई शक नही हिन्दुस्तान मे चोपटा की प्राक्रतिक सुंदरता नायाब है। कोसानी के बारे मे महात्मा गाँधी ने स्विट्ज़रलैंड ऑफ इंडिया कहा था। वहाँ उन्होने अपना आश्रम भी बनाया परन्तु चोपटा की सुंदरता के आगे कोसानी कहीं नही टिकता है। जो भी चोपटा आता है वह यहाँ की खूबसूरती को भूल नही सकता। यहाँ पर हम लोग लगभग आधा घंटा रुक कर आस पास के नज़ारे देखते रहे। यहाँ की सुंदरता देख कर बार-बार सब कहने लगे बहुत अच्छा किया जो हम इस रास्ते से आए वरना हमे पता ही नही चलता कि कितनी खूबसूरत यह जगह है।

भाग4: पैंग – ताग्लंगला ला – उप्शी – कारू– लेह……………12-सितम्बर

आज हम पैंग से 185km का सफ़र तेय करके लेह पहुँच गए। लेह पहुँच कर बिना समय ख़राब किए हमारा सबसे पहला काम था “DC” ऑफिस जाना। वहाँ जाकर हमे “नुब्रा वेली” (nubra valley) और “पेंगोंग सो” (pangong so) जाने के लिए “Inner-Line Permit” लेना था। “DC” ऑफिस मे ज्यादा भीड़ तो नहीं थी पर ऑफिस बंद ना हो जाए इस बात का भय सता रहा था। ऊपर से सरकारी ऑफिसर कब अपनी सीट छोड़ कर चला जाए क्या भरोसा। सीमित छुटियाँ होने की वजह से हम एक दिन की देरी भी नहीं झेल सकते थे। हरी और मनोज ने तो दिल्ली से हेदराबाद का हवाई टिकेट भी करा दिया था। अगर देरी होती तो इन दोनों को मोटी चपत लगने वाली थी। परमिट का काम राहुल को सौंप दिया गया। मैं, हरी और मनोज “DC” ऑफिस के बाहर फ़ोटो लेने लगे।
