Mystical monsoon visit to Nahan, Paonta Sahib, and Dakpatthar – Part I

Intermittently, when the Rain God seemed to have become a bit weary and softened the intensity of the downpour to smaller and scantier drops, we took a round of the rain-washed outskirts of the resort. But a look up above in the sky at the over-burdened cloud mounds, we knew it might start raining heavily any minute and so did not venture far and also had thoughtfully equipped ourselves with umbrellas. Everything looked so fresh and green early in the morning. The leaves were dripping wet and glistening with droplets of rain water hanging from their edges. The rains seemed to have breathed a fresh lease of life to the flora and fauna.

Stanley Park is an urban park surrounding the city, a two minute walk from my hotel in Canada Place. I spent an early morning taking a stroll, watching the runners practice for the upcoming half marathon, mommies walking around with their babies in strollers, and tourists walking excitedly with their cameras, posing and taking pictures of everything. In fact, two of my lab mates signed up to run the half-marathon the day after their conference presentations, and it was inspiring to see people travel across the coast to talk at conferences, and then change into their gym clothes from the formal suits and go about running miles all around the city. Hats off to their energy, although this gave me some more time to sleep late.

Stanley Park is huge, and when I say it is huge, I mean it. If you have been to Central Park in New York City, this is even bigger than that, a paved path running around its circumference. Lined with tall trees, lush greenery, and full of enthusiastic people jogging around, Stanley Park is ranked the 16th best park in the world and the 6th best in North America.

रुद्रप्रयाग से 9 किलोमीटर आगे तिलवारा है यहाँ हम लोगो ने चाय पी. 10 मिनट का रेस्ट किया और फिर आगे के लिए चल दिए. तिलवारा से 19 किलोमीटर आगे अगस्तमुनि है . यहाँ अगस्तमुनि का आश्रम है.यहाँ पहुँचते हुए शाम ढलने लगी थी. हमारे बाईं ओर मंदाकिनी सड़क के साथ साथ पत्थरो के बीच अठखेलियाँ करती हुई बह रही थी. बहुत ही खूबसूरत और मनमोहक द्रशय था. सामने के पहाड़ो की चोटियो पर सूर्यास्त की किरणे पड़ने से सुनहरे रंग से चमक रही थी.मन तो कुछ समय यहाँ पर रुक कर प्राक्रतिक सौंदर्य को देखने को हो रहा था पर ड्राइवर को अपनी मंज़िल पहुँचने की थी. अगस्तमुनि से 19 किलोमीटर आगे कुंड है यहाँ पहुँचते हुए अँधेरा छा गया था. अब ड्राइवर अँधेरे मे बस चला रहा था. गुप्त काशी को पार कर लगभग 8 बजे सोन प्रयाग से 7 किलोमीटर पहले हम सीतापुर पहुँच गये. यहाँ ड्राइवर ने रात मे रुकने के लिए एक होटेल के सामने बस रोक दी और बोला रात यहीं रुकेंगे , आप लोग सामने होटेल मे जाकर अपने लिए कमरा देख कर तय कर लो. यह होटेल बहुत ही साधारण था कमरो मे एक अजीब सी गंध आ रही थी. मन मे विचार आया ड्राइवर को यहाँ से कमीशन मिलता होगा तभी यहाँ रोका है. मैने अपने लड़के से नज़दीक के दूसरे होटेल देखकर आने को कहा और स्वयं दूसरी तरफ जाकर होटेल देखने लगा. मुझे इस होटेल से 100 गज पहले एक नया बना हुआ साफ सुथरा होटेल मिल गया. इस समय सीजन ना होने के कारण बिल्कुल खाली था. इस समय तक इतने बड़े होटेल मे हमारा ही परिवार था. हमे 400 रुपये के हिसाब से 2 डबल बेड का एक रूम मिल गया. मैने बस के दूसरे यात्रियों से भी बोला इस बेकार से होटेल मे ना ठहर कर मेरे वाले होटेल मे ठहरे.पर वह सारे उसी होटेल मे ही ठहरे. रात मे जब हम खाना खाने बाहर निकले , मेरे से कुछ घोड़े वाले घोड़ा तय करने के लिए कहने लगे. पहले तो मैने यह सोंचा था कि गौरी कुंड से एक-दो किलोमीटर पैदल चलने के बाद अगर नहीं चला जाएगा तो घोड़े कर लेंगे पर अब जब यह लोग जिस तरह की बाते कर रहे थे उससे लगा कि तय ही कर लेना चाहिए. आने जाने के लिए 800 रुपये प्रति घोड़ा तय हुआ.

A weekend pilgrimage to Rayagada

While transiting through southern Odisha on our way to Chhattisgarh last year, my wife expressed a desire to visit the famous Maa Majhighariani Mandir in Rayagada. I told her that it meant a detour of over 200 kms over bad roads and promised to take her there some other time. She wasn’t happy but had no choice in the matter. A few days later, there was a minor collision with a truck which my wife viewed as a divine warning. Recently, I changed my car and my wife was insistent that we go and seek the forgiveness and blessings of the Goddess.

At 12.30 pm we crossed over into Karnataka, and paid another toll. Immediately we could sense that we were in a different state. The traffic was much less in Karnataka as compared to the heavy traffic right upto Kolhapur in Maharashtra. The scenery was better, with undulating hills in the distance. There were flowering bushes in the road divider which made the drive more pleasant, and lay-byes with public utilities at regular intervals along the highway.

पार्क की सुबह बहुत खूबसूरत थी. हिरण जैसे दो प्राणी घूम रहे थे. सुबह उठ कर एक चक्कर गांव का लगाता हूँ. एक दुकान खुली देख कर अंदर काफी लेने जाता हूँ, साथ ही खाने के लिए एक पेस्ट्री ले लेता हूँ. यह दुकान वाला बहुत सामान बेच रहा था. काफी, ब्रेड चोकलेट, और बहुत सा सामान. पेट्रोल पम्प भी इस दुकान वाले का ही था. साथ में साइकल भी किराये पर दे रहा था. एक साइकल का एक घंटे का किराया १० डॉलर, और हेल्मट के १० डॉलर अलग से. साथ में मोटर बाइक भी किराये के लिए थे.

As we entered the mountainous terrain, I observed the colour of the flowing river on our left – so different than the rivers we were used to see during this ride!
Out first break of the day was at Rumtse, the same hamlet where we stopped on our way to Leh a few days ago.
