London 2012 – Getting there

We went in and did the usual hoolah of checking in and immigration etc., and headed for the duty-free/lounges. My dad waited patiently while mom and I took a look around the duty-free, and finding nothing to our liking, commenced to the lounge. It was the same lounge and, of course, nothing had changed since last year – the couches, the low impossible-to-eat-off little coffee tables, the lights, everything was the same. The food was kept on a granite table with L-shaped counters around it. They had patties, sausages etc for starters, and rice, Mexican chicken gravy and different curries for people wanting a full-er meal. I first went to the patties, which were kept in that microwave-y, revolve-y thingies. I took one and got back to the couch we were sitting on and picked up the day’s Daily Mail, and spent the next 10-15 minutes savouring ‘delicacies’ (okay, it was just a patty, but still) and reading about what’s going on in the country hosting us for the next 14 days or so. I then went on to get myself the other things – I got myself sausages and sat down to eat, and in my mind thought, ‘wow, pretty delicious’, but the truth was, I was gonna learn what delicious sausages really are. I decided not to pig out anymore on the food on land and fill myself only once in air, and so for the rest of the time all I did was drink various kinds of juices, call all my friends to say bye and generally watch the news and listen to music, thinking of all the delicious cuisine I was going to savour soon.

The Naf river rises in the Arakan mountain ranges of Myanmar, thence it flows through Myanmar and Bangladesh. Akyab in Myanmar is on its left Bank, Teknaf in Bangladesh is on its right bank. Outside the famed Sundarbans, the river is home to Sundari trees . Flowing between mountain ranges, dotted with little fishing boats, Silver Hued and wide as the heart of a Saint, the river was in true sense the “Daughter of the Mountains”. As the boat cruised through the Naf, Myanmar came into view, the 36X zoom of my Nikon P-500 revealed a beautiful land nestled at the foot of sky kissing Mountains and dotted with beautiful pagodas, but fenced with tall barbed wire fences all through. It was a reminder that this was a country which is warning the entire world , “Keep OFF”. Cut off from the world for the last 24 years , Myanmar is an enigma in itself. We are all awaiting the day when Myanmar will be opened up to the world at large and tourists would flock back to this lovely place.

A couple of days away from the madness of the cities, away from what some of us call life, are always welcome. Mountains are such heavens of silence and solitude. And when you get back from this heaven, you come away feeling saner, rejuvenated. You come back a better one…

There is nothing extraordinary about Birthi, at least on the face of it. It is a tiny village, with couple of shops on road and the KMVN guesthouse perched atop a hill, right on the main road. However, what breaks the silence and the dullness is the mighty roar of a waterfall, called Birthi Falls. This is what makes Birthi fall on the tourist map and makes it really a place worth visiting.

We come across “Nilgiri Coach” as we started walking. The Nilgiri Toy Train journey runs in between Mettupalayam and Ooty hill station. This narrow gauge train covers a distance of 46 kms. The train runs through the plains, plantations and tropical rainforest of the Nilgiri. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005 and be a part of Mountain Railways of Indian World Heritage Site along with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (1999) and the Kalka-Shimla Railway (2008).

The Indomitable Daulatabad Fort, Aurangabad

As you enter the fort, you are greeted by this tall minar – Chand Minar. It used to be covered with Persian glazed tiles. Now they have whitewashed it in faded orange colour. You want to strangle the person who ordered this colour. The minar was built by Ahmed Shah II to celebrate the capture of the fort. To approach from the front one has to go through three bastions of fortified walls.

सुबह सुबह जल्दी सब उठ गए और दूर पहाड़ियों से सूरज देवता के दर्शन करने लगे, सचमुच बड़ा ही मनभावन नज़ारा था। नहा धोकर हमने होटल वाले से आस पास की जगहो के बारे मैं पूछा तो कुछ ढंग का नहीं लगा तो सबने विचार किया के चलो मसूरी चलते हैं, आज रात वहीं रुकेंगे। इसके बाद सबने नाश्ता कर के थोड़ी बहुत फोटोग्राफी करने के बाद प्रस्थान कर दिया। अब हम लोगों की मंज़िल थी यमुना पल और केंपटी फॉल, पहले ही इरादा कर लिया था की टाईगर फॉल का बदला केंपटी फॉल मैं लेंगे। नाश्ता करके तो चले ही थे इसलिए कहीं रुके नहीं॥ रुके सीधा यमुना पल जाकर जब सबको जोरों से भूक की तलब लगी। यमुना पल को पार करते ही किनारे पर दाहिने हाथ पर एक छोटी सी दुकान हैं खाने के बारे मैं यूहीं पूछ लिया तो पता चला के खाना भी मिल जाएगा॥ अब सबको भूख भी ज़ोरों से लगी थी इसलिए मांगा लिया। खाने मैं थाली थी जिसमे दाल, चावल और गोभी की सब्जी थी। और पूछने पर पता चला की मछ्ली की सब्जी भी मिलेगी और वो भी ताज़ा। दुकान के मालिक ने बताया की सीज़न मैं यहाँ पर काफी भीड़ रहती हैं जिसकी वजह से बाकी दुकानें भी खुली रहती हैं, लेकिन अब सब बंद हैं शायद बाद मैं खुल जाये |

वहाँ पर शायद राफ्टिंग भी होती होगी क्यूंकी जगह जगह बोर्ड भी लगे हुये थे। खैर खाना खाया और जब दाम पूछे तो सब दंग रह गए। एक थाली का दाम था 20 रु जिसमे दाल, चावल, गोभी की सब्जी और 4 रोटी। और 1 प्लेट फिश करी सिर्फ 50 रु की कुल मिलकर 200 -250 का खर्चा रहा होगा। जिसमे कोल्ड ड्रिंक और चिप्स वागेरह भी थे। ऐसा स्वादिष्ट खाना और इतने कम दाम में तो शायद हमने पूरे टूर में नहीं खाया। खाने वाले का शुक्रिया अदा करके हम लोग मसूरी की तरफ वापस चल दिये॥ और पहाड़ों की सुंदरता के मज़े लेते रहे। शायद भरे पेट में वो ज्यादा अच्छे लग रहे थे। शाम करीब 3 बजे हम लोग केंपटी फॉल पहुंचे और बिना एक पल गवाएँ दौड़ पड़े फॉल की तरफ, मैं तो अभी 10 दिन पहले भी आया था लेकिन तब फॉल में नहाया नहीं था इसीलिए मुझे सबसे ज्यादा जल्दी थी। 2-3 घंटे तसल्ली से हम सब झरने का आनंद लेते रहे लेकिन जैसे ही शाम बढ्ने लगी हम लोग की ठिठुरन बदने लगी और एक एक करके सब बाहर आ गए॥ अब दूसरा काम था मसूरी पहुँचकर एक अच्छा सा कमरा लेना और इस काम को सोनू बड़िया कर सकता था, क्यूंकी वो भी 2-3 बार मसूरी आ चुका था। मसूरी पहुंचर हमने “दीप होटल “ मैं एक कमरा लिया। होटल काफी अच्छा था, साफ सूथरा और पार्किंग भी थी।

There is so much to see – age-old photos, long-standing maps, coins from all over the world, documents, local utensils & other items, wind-up gramophones, hand-made saddlebags, wooden bottles, native dresses and attires, hand-crafted shoes…so much that I can’t portray it in words and even if I venture to, I need to write at least 10000 words!

With our hats off to Dr. Pangtey, Nitin and I came back for lunch to the hotel by 2:00pm. En route, we crossed several beautiful living mountain streams – there’s something magical about these streams, indescribable in words. I’ve always been fascinated by them…the mountain-lover in me wants to halt at everyone, wishes to explore the start of each such stream and secretly plans to some day even live next to one such stream!

A Day Trip OF Philly

Philadelphia has lots of statues in the parks and roads most of them of historical figures like Presidents and war heroes specially popular being President Lincoln’s statue on Kelly Drive, I could not take its picture as the bus was moving too fast. But I was able to take picture of the statue of chief justice John Marshall outside the west gate of Franklin Institute. Ever heard of a Judge’s statue in India? If yes please inform me. There is also a controversial statue of the Italian Stallion Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa a must for movie buffs as the story of Rocky series is in Philly. The guides in the buses were very knowledgeable and were telling a lot of stories about not only the city but also some of the controversies going in the city. The controversy around Ricky’s statue was another one.

Trip to Harsil (Haridwar, Rishikesh, Narender Nagar, Uttrakashi)

Trekking and walking by road is the best thing if you want to feel the naturalness of small places like Harsil. It was cold in the morning but still walk was very pleasant. My kids enjoyed trekking a lot. We reached back our room and taken hot water bath. We went for the breakfast and enquired locals where and what to visit in Harsil.
After taking breakfast we packed lunch and snacks for kids and visited the following travel spots with the help of local villagers. They are:

Dharali which is 3 Kms away from Harsil and easily approachable by road
Mukwas village is 1 Km away from Harsil, is the home of Goddess Gangotri during winters because due to heavy snowfall all the ways towards Gangotri Dham are closed.
Sattal is a 3 kms from Dharali and 7 kms from Harsil. Sattal is a cluster of seven different lakes where you can reach by road or go by trekking. The journey towards Sattal is beautiful and full of picturesque views.

The Untouched beauty of Kerala – Athirapally and Vazahal waterfall

We were enjoying our car ride on this wonderful route. Then after one hour or so our driver took a turn and we reached at one beautiful place. The place has beautiful landscape, water bodies, small reservoir and a small tea shop and Restroom. (What I remember the place name as Nature’s Resort (but unfortunately I am unable to find this place on internet). It’s a picturesque spot and one can actually enjoy by going into water as water level is very low here.
