Going Crazy in Mukteshwar and Nainital

Nainital was just 10 kms from Bhowali and the road went uphill. So we decided to board the cab at last. Nainital meant the usual activity of walking around the Naini Lake, One hour in peddle boats and a shopping spree on the mall road.

परन्तु मुझे आकर्षित किया उनके केलों ने. खूब सुन्दर और पुष्ट केले थे. मुझे केले खरीदता देख कर एक स्त्री ने मुझे समझाया कि मैं खीरे ले लूं और केले छोड़ दूँ. पर मैं कहाँ मानने वाला था. बस जैसे ही मैंने केले ख़रीदे, वृक्षों की डालों से तेजी-से उतर कर करीबन २०-२५ बंदरों ने मुझे घेर लिया. घबरा कर मैंने केले वहीँ जमीन पर फेंके, जो क्षण-भर में ही बंदरों द्वारा लूट लिए गए. अब उस डंडे से लैस व्यक्ति ने बंदरों को भगाने के लिए डंडा भाजना शुरू किया. बन्दर भाग गए. अब यह तो नहीं पता कि डंडे से भागे या केले चट कर के भागे. मैंने उन दोनों स्त्रियों को समझाने की कोशिश की कि जब यहाँ बंदरों का उत्पात है तो केले बेचते ही क्यों हो. दोनों स्त्रियाँ मुस्कुरायीं क्योंकि आज उन्हें एक और शहरी आदमी मिला था, जो जंगल में बिना देखे चलता था.

Leaving Thimphu, on to Paro, Bhutan

Paro is the most gorgeous city in the whole of Bhutan; and far more beautiful than Thimphu (wondering why the king does not stay here). It has the only International Airport in the country, and situated on the bank on Paro River, surrounded by hills. Before reaching to Paro city, we met Paro River on the way and fell in love with it. We immediately stopped the car, got down and went inside a downstream.

प्रोग्राम तय हुआ की बाइक से लैंसडाउन चला जाए, क्योकि मुज़फ्फर नगर से ये सबसे नजदीक का हिल स्टेशन पड़ता हैं, सुबह ठीक ६ बजे हम लोग निकल पड़े, पहला पड़ाव हुआ कोटद्वार में, एक चाय की दुकान पर जाकर रुके, एक – एक कप चाय और एक – एक मठरी खाकर आगे चल पड़े, दूर से सिध्बली बाबा के दर्शन हुए, मनोहर कहने लगा पहले दर्शन करते हैं, मैं बोला वापिस आते हुए करेगे, ये तो एक टोक लगनी थी, माफ़ कीजियेगा अपनी मुज़फ्फरनगर वाली बोली बोल रहा हूँ, पहाड़ पर अपनी चढ़ाई शुरू हो चुकी थी, हमारी बजाज प्लेटिना धीरे धीरे चढ़ रही थी.

We had already planned to visit the deer park in the morning and later Dudhni Lake in the evening. We also found out that from Silvassa towards south the deer park comes first and then comes Dudhni Lake. I heard about Dudhni Lake turning romantic in the evening. It just matched my mood since I wanted to do some wildlife photography in the morning & relax in the evening. Our main challenge was to reach these two spots on time and without any expensive transportation.

Pahalgam turned out to be very beautiful too, with the roaring Lidder and the rocky snow clad mountains complimenting each other. After finishing our breakfast, we headed for our first destination, Betaab Valley. It is so called as it was once the location for the filming of the film, “Betaab”. It was also the background in many scenes from the Ranbir Kapoor starrer, Rockstar. To reach the valley, a detour has to be taken from the road leading to Chandenwadi. It is located beside a much calmer portion of the Lidder, and with its artificially planted forest, does give the feel of being in the UK. Although Betaab valley is slightly commercialized, it has a very calming effect on the nerves.

It was raining heavinly so we moved quickly and covered the place from different angles. To avoid rains I devised a trick and used my cowboy and raincoat hats as one person would hold the cap while second will hold the device right under it and click photos. The trick worked really nice and we managed to get good shots even in heavy downpour without any damage to our cameras.

सीढ़ियों ने अब बहुत ऊँचाई ले ली थी. विशाल चट्टान-नुमा ब्रह्मगिरी पर्वत अपने सम्पूर्ण विशालता को ले कर हमारे सामने था. उस ऊँचाई से त्रैम्बकेश्वर शहर कितना बौना और मनोहर लग रहा था. सीढियां पर्वत की सपाट सतहों से लग गयी थीं. इन सीढ़ियों में घाटी की तरफ लोहे की रेलिंग्स भी लगे हुए थे ताकि कोई फिसल कर घाटियों में न गिर जाये. उस पर अब बन्दर सामने आ गए. पहाड़ की ऊँची खड़ी सपाट सतह पर भी ये बन्दर चीखते-चिल्लाते ऐसे दौड़ते थे की मानो समतल धरती पर दौड़ रहे हों. कूद कर अचानक किसी पदयात्री के सामने आ जाना और उनके हाथ से खाना छीन लेने में इन बंदरों को महारत हासिल थी. पर अनुभवी यात्री अपने साथ इनके लिए भी कुछ खाद्य सामग्री ले कर चलते है. श्री दानी ने भी ऐसा ही किया था. उसने अपने थैले से बिस्कुट निकाला और बंदरों को निश्चिंतता से खिलाया. और इधर हम तीनों अनुभव-हीन यात्री अपनी छड़ियाँ पकड़े बंदरों से बच कर आगे चलते रहे.

First thing first – True’s care! Our RE Team Leader Aakash had announced last evening that the bikes should get serviced, if needed, early on this day. True was cruising all fine and needed no service. However, eight days of grime, dirt and dips in water forced True to take a bath! So, I initiated the hunt for a bike/car wash center nearby. However, it being Sunday, Leh was largely shut and I had to drive 8kms on Manali Highway, all the way to the hamlet of Chogalmasar Jamba, where across the bridge exists an old acquaintance’s garage; a person whom was meeting after good six years! But, just like all other people from the hills, he was extremely warm and forthcoming. So, True was given special preference in queue.

We hired a cab from Kathgodam that drove us through many a switchbacks and hairpin curves to Nainital in pitch darkness of early morning. It was a clear sky with bright constellations shining overhead – immaculate and sinless.

Delhi to Gangotri, peace at Gaumukh

You are covered by Mountains on either side and from front Gangotri Glacier. We spent close to 1 hrs. at Gaumukh.After taking chilly holy dip at Gaumukh we decided to return. On this stretch, returning too is tough because for many kms. You have to walk on pointed heavy stones.
