Andhra was a bastion of Buddhism for at least a thousand years. It was a centre of learning and Buddhism spread out to Sri Lanka and South East Asia through its ports. The stupas and monasteries provided the architectural models for the more famous Buddhist shrines in the rest of the world like the famous Borobodur in Indonesia. The Buddhist phase lasted for nearly a thousand years till the rise of Shaivism in the 7th century CE obliterated Buddhism from this region. It is sad that while these places attract visitors from all over the Buddhist world, Indians are not aware of the existence of these places.In this series, I am retracing the footsteps of those distant ancestors of mine.

पैदल घूमते घामते प्रकृति को निहारते हुए सलधार पहुँचे और सबसे पहले वसुधारा की पद यात्रा से सबक लेकर एक दुकान पर रुककर आगे की यात्रा के लिए कुछ चने और मीठी गोलियाँ रख ली. सलधार से भविष्य बद्री तक का रास्ता ज़्यादातर जगह जंगल के बीच से गुज़रते हुए जाता था जहाँ कई जगह राह मे दो रास्ते सामने आ जाते थे जो हमारी दुविधा का कारण बन बैठते. ऐसे मे कई बार या तो स्थानीय लोगो की मदद से और कई बार बस किस्मत के भरोसे ‘अककड़ बक्कड़’ करके हम लोग जैसे तैसे सुभाईं नामक गाँव तक पहुँचे जहाँ से भविष्य बद्री की दूरी लगभग 1 ½ किमी ही रह जाती है.

The Naf river rises in the Arakan mountain ranges of Myanmar, thence it flows through Myanmar and Bangladesh. Akyab in Myanmar is on its left Bank, Teknaf in Bangladesh is on its right bank. Outside the famed Sundarbans, the river is home to Sundari trees . Flowing between mountain ranges, dotted with little fishing boats, Silver Hued and wide as the heart of a Saint, the river was in true sense the “Daughter of the Mountains”. As the boat cruised through the Naf, Myanmar came into view, the 36X zoom of my Nikon P-500 revealed a beautiful land nestled at the foot of sky kissing Mountains and dotted with beautiful pagodas, but fenced with tall barbed wire fences all through. It was a reminder that this was a country which is warning the entire world , “Keep OFF”. Cut off from the world for the last 24 years , Myanmar is an enigma in itself. We are all awaiting the day when Myanmar will be opened up to the world at large and tourists would flock back to this lovely place.

उदयपुर – जगदीश मंदिर – माउंट आबू हेतु प्रयाण

वहां से निकल कर अगला पड़ाव था – जगदीश मंदिर ! मैं चूंकि एक घंटा पहले यहां तक आ चुका था अतः मुझे बड़ा अच्छा सा लग रहा था कि अब मैं अपने परिवार के लिये गाइड का रोल निर्वहन कर सकता हूं। परन्तु पहली बार तो मैं मंदिर की सीढ़ियों के नीचे से ही वापिस चला गया था। ऊपर मेरे लिये क्या – क्या आकर्षण मौजूद हैं, इसका मुझे आभास भी नहीं था। मंदिर की सीढ़ियों के नीचे दो फूल वालियां अपने टोकरे में फूल – मालायें लिये बैठी थीं । माला खरीद कर हम सीढ़ियों पर बढ़ चले। भाईसाहब का कई वर्ष पूर्व एक्सीडेंट हुआ था, तब से उनको सीढ़ियां चढ़ने में असुविधा होती है। वह बोले कि मैं टैक्सी में ही बैठता हूं, तुम लोग दर्शन करके आओ। मैने कहा कि टैक्सी में बैठे रहने की कोई जरूरत नहीं। मुझे एक दूसरा रास्ता मालूम है मैं आपको वहां से मंदिर में ले चलूंगा। उसमें दो-तीन सीढ़ियां ही आयेंगी। वह आश्चर्यचकित हो गये कि मुझे इस मंदिर के रास्तों के बारे में इतनी गहन जानकारी कैसे है। वास्तव में, जब मैं पैदल घूम रहा था तो एक बहुत ढलावदार रास्ते से होकर मैं मंदिर के प्रवेश द्वार तक आया था। उस ढलावदार रास्ते पर भी जगदीश मंदिर के लिये छोटा सा प्रवेश द्वार दिखाई दिया था। भाईसाहब इतनी सारी सीढ़ियां नहीं चढ़ सकते थे क्योंकि उनका घुटना पूरा नहीं मुड़ पाता परन्तु ढलावदार रास्ते पर चलने में कोई दिक्कत नहीं थी। मेरी जिस ’आवारागर्दी’ को लेकर सुबह ये तीनों लोग खफा नज़र आ रहे थे, अब तीनों ही बहुत खुश थे। आखिर इसी ’आवारागर्दी’ (जिसे मैं घुमक्कड़ी कहना ज्यादा पसन्द करता हूं) की वज़ह से भाईसाहब को मंदिर के दर्शन जो हो गये थे।

उदयपुर में पहला दिन और यादगार डिनर

शाम के छः बज रहे थे और हमारा महिलावर्ग ’सोलह सिंगार’ करके उदयपुर भ्रमण के लिये पूरी तरह तैयार था। रिसेप्शन से इंटरकॉम पर संदेश आया कि ड्राइवर महोदय आ गये हैं और हम नीचे आ जायें। हम सब अपनी इंडिका टैक्सी में लद कर घूमने चल पड़े! टैक्सी से स्थानीय भ्रमण में मुझे एक दिक्कत अनुभव होती है और वह ये कि हम जिस शहर में घूम रहे होते हैं, उसके भूगोल से काफी कुछ अपरिचित ही रह जाते हैं। किसी शहर को ठीक से समझना हो तो स्टीयरिंग आपके हाथ में होना चाहिये तब आपको किसी स्थान का भूगोल समझ में आता है। अगर कहीं से मोटरसाइकिल या स्कूटर किराये पर मिल सके तो घूमने का सबसे बढ़िया और मजेदार तरीका वही है। परन्तु हमने तो पांच दिनों के लिये टैक्सी कर ली थी और मेरी पत्नी सहित सभी सहयात्रियों की प्राथमिकता सुविधापूर्ण यात्रा थी जिसमें कार के शीशे बन्द करके वातानुकूलित हवा खाना सबसे महत्वपूर्ण था। ऐसे में मैने तो हल ये निकाला था कि जहां भी मौका लगे, अकेले ही पैदल घूमने निकल पड़ो! घरवाले अगर होटल में आराम फरमाना चाहते हैं तो उनको होटल में ही रहने दो, अकेले ही घूमो मगर घूमो अवश्य । अस्तु!

पता नहीं, किधर – किधर को घुमाते फिराते हुए, और उदयपुर की शान में कसीदे पढ़ते हुए हमारे टैक्सी चालक हसीन महोदय ने जब टैक्सी रोकी तो पता चला कि हम सहेलियों की बाड़ी पर आ पहुंचे हैं। हसीन ने अपने यात्रियों के लिये गाइड के रूप में सेवायें प्रदान करना अपना पावन कर्तव्य मान लिया था अतः सहेलियों की बाड़ी के बारे में हमें बताया कि ये फतेह सागर लेक के किनारे पर स्थित एक आमोद गृह है जहां महारानी अपनी 48 सखियों के साथ जल विहार और किल्लोल किया करती थीं । आज कल जैसे पति लोग अपनी पत्नी को एक मीडिया फोन लाकर दे दिया करते हैं ताकि वह वीडियो गेम खेलती रहे और पति भी सुकून और शांति भरे कुछ पल घर में गुज़ार सके, कुछ-कुछ ऐसे ही 18 वीं शताब्दी में उदयपुर के महाराणा संग्राम सिंह ने अपने घर को संग्राम से बचाने के लिये अपनी महारानी और उनके साथ दहेज में आई हुई 48 युवा परिचारिकाओं के मनोरंजन के लिये सहेलियों की बाड़ी बनवा कर दे दी थी। यह एक विशाल बाग है जिसमें खूबसूरत फव्वारे लगे हुए हैं । फतेह सागर लेक इसकी जलापूर्ति करती है। हम जब यहां पर पहुंचे तो सूर्यास्त हो चुका था। बाग में कृत्रिम प्रकाश में हमें सहेलियों की बाड़ी का बहुत विस्तार से अध्ययन करने का मौका तो नहीं मिला पर कुछ बड़े खूबसूरत से फव्वारे वहां चल रहे थे जिनके बारे में विश्वस्त सूत्रों से यानि विकीपीडिया से ज्ञात हुआ है कि ये फव्वारे rain dance का आभास देने के लिये बाद में महाराणा भोपाल सिंह ने इंग्लैंड से मंगवाये और यहां पर लगवाये थे।

A Tale of Two Temples

The Bala Balaji temple is a standing testimony to the devotion and perseverance of a humble coconut vendor called Ramaswami. Every year, he used to visit Tirupati and place a share of his annual income at the feet of Lord Venkateswara as his offering. In 1966, the priests there refused to place the offerings at the feet of the idol and understandably, Ramaswamy was upset thinking that the rejection was by the Lord himself.

That night, Lord Balaji appeared in Ramaswamy’s dream and told him to build a shrine in his hometown itself. Ramaswamy installed framed photographs of Lord Venkateswara and his consort Padmavati in his shop. He would feed the people who visited his shrine without charging any money. In course of time, the temple attracted hundreds of devotees and Ramaswamy had sufficient funds to build a temple. The construction was completed in 1991 and the idols were installed an consecrated by Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji, a famous Vaishnavite saint.

We come across “Nilgiri Coach” as we started walking. The Nilgiri Toy Train journey runs in between Mettupalayam and Ooty hill station. This narrow gauge train covers a distance of 46 kms. The train runs through the plains, plantations and tropical rainforest of the Nilgiri. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005 and be a part of Mountain Railways of Indian World Heritage Site along with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (1999) and the Kalka-Shimla Railway (2008).

Single day venture to Taj

There is a separate line for women there, usually that is longer. And you would have a bunch of touts who would offer you options to by pass the long queue. Totally avoidable. The line moves fast and shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes. 20 bucks per ticket, if you are an Indian citizen and INR 250 for foreign tourists. Also kids up to the age of 15 have free entry.  Do not carry anything except your camera and phone inside. Usually the security would withhold everything else, even my son’s dinosaur toys.

It is usually crowded and stuffed inside the tomb. Do not try to click a pic inside with your mobile. There is an old caretaker who would snatch your phone and throw it outside. Yes. Once you are out and on your way back, at the exit there would be people trying to sell you small mementos of Taj. The fair price is 20 bucks, so don’t get tricked like me. I paid 50 per piece and was superbly excited about my skills to bargain when another kid walked up and offered me the same for 15-20 bucks per piece.
