Lansdowne : Way to Achieve Salvation (Nothing Religious About it!)

After breakfast, now it is the time for some real fun as now this resort is equipped with some really adventurous sports, as promised by Mr. Dinesh of the resort on our last visit. Thrilling and adventures Zip line was amazing, so were the Brahma Bridge, Monkey Crawl, Spider Web, Walk balance and many other activities. The most commendable fact attracts your attention that the management put all the activities keeping the important aspect of harmony with nature. Not a single activity looks an encroachment on the environment or damaging it. For the not so physically fit people like me there are soft sports materials like badminton, chess, playing cards or ludo etc. are available. It looks good when the management of a resort taking care of people for different tastes and providing them enough choices. Nevertheless my wife and son take full enjoy of all such wonderful activities, you can see the joy on their faces while trying various activities. Rain stops their expedition after some time and they are forced to halt these activities but instead of entering the comfort of four walls we prefer to sit and enjoy in a tent, meant for the staff and keeping resort’s additional goods.

Kutchh – of Great Rann White Desert, Kalo Dungar Black Hills and Pingleshwar White Surf Beach

The first thing that comes to mind when you think of Kutch is the Rann. In visuals you have seen it as white, featureless and stark landscape where not a blade of grass grows. Quick research of net has shown that you can enjoy two views of the Rann. First the aerial view from top of Kalo Dungar and the second is to actually walk on the white terrain at the same site where the annual Rann Mahotsav is held during full moon nights in winters.

It is May and hot. You have few hours only and have started early and are now racing north. The driver wants to take the car aerial but you have to keep reminding him that you want to see Rann only from a few hundred metres up and not all the way from the top!

Tour of Uttarakhand – Chopta Tunganath

A little ahead we see the first shop on the track which is basically a place to have some tea, Buran juice (rhododendron juice) which is said to be good for the heart and some bottled water, biscuits and the like. Serves as a little place to catch your breath and soak up the picture perfect surroundings. Henceforth, these small shops pop up at regular intervals. We maintain a steady though slow pace and take very short breathers as we climb so as not to break the rhythm of the climb. Roughly half-way up, we take a longish break of 10 mins where we are treated to another lifer! We see a pair of Collared Grosbeak.

A Trip to Tungareshwar – Lord Shiv Temple in Shravan Month

Tungareshwar Temple is small, well maintained. On both side of the Main gate of Temple there is a Small Temple.Photo frame of Lord Ganesh, Goddess Durga and Lord Shree Ram hang from the ceiling wall. In centre of the temple is Nandi Bail, the Vehicle of Lord Shiva, sitting steady as His Guard. Above Him hangs a huge bell. I ring it to announce my arrival and stand in a queue for Darshan, as there was not too much rush.

We started at 4:30 from Gurgaon – our usual time of leaving. It gives us an extra edge in avoiding the Delhi traffic. But still at this hour there were trucks plying in the middle of the road. Sometimes, I think what economic super power we are going to become when we can’t build a simple bypass to avoid Delhi. Anyway, we continued. In around 3 hours we reached Muzafarnagar bye pass. Now there are 2 routes to go from here.

लैंसडाउन : अहँ ब्रह्मास्मि के पथ पर कुछ क्षण

यहाँ-वहाँ कुछ नौजवान लडके-लडकियाँ खुले में ग्रुप बनाकर बैठे हैं, कुछ इधर-उधर घूम रहे है, कुछ छोटे बच्चे खरगोशों के पीछे भाग रहें हैं, कुछ तोते और चिड़ियाँ भी हैं, दूर तक फैला, खुला विशाल क्षेत्र, चारो तरफ चीड़ के पेड़, आपको जंगल में मंगल का नज़ारा देता है | एक कप गरमा-गरम अदरक वाली चाय, आपकी रास्ते की सारी थकान उतार देती है | यहाँ कोई रिसेप्शन या हॉल नही है, केवल सोने के लिए कमरे हैं, और आप खुले में बाहर बैठ कर पूरी तरह से प्रकृति को जी सकते हो | चाय पीते-पीते आपका कमरा तैयार हो जाता है | रिजोर्ट की ही तरह कमरा भी बहुत साधारण है, साधारण प्लास्टर की हुई दीवारें, टीन की छत, जिन पर अंदर से लकड़ी की सीलिंग लगी है, कमरे के साथ अटैच्ड टॉयलेट के अलावा, एक डबल बैड, दो सोफा-नुमा कुर्सियां, एक छोटी मेज़ और टीवी | कमरे में जाकर कपड़े बदलते हैं, पर कमरे में मन ही नही लगता, वो तो कमरे से बाहर निकलना चाहता है | मोबाइल के सिग्नल अक्सर यहाँ नही मिलते, BSNL अपवाद है | टीवी कोई देखना नही चाहता क्योंकि सारी प्रकृति तो बाहर बिखरी पड़ी है, वो कमरे में तो आएगी नही, अपितु हमे ही उसके पास जाना पड़ेगा, यदि कमरे की चार-दीवारों में ही बैठना होता, तो अपने घर सा सुख कहाँ ? असली नजारे देखने हैं तो बाहर निकलो, मिलो दूसरों से… धीरे-धीरे आपकी सबसे जान-पहचान होने लगती है, ज्यादातर युवा तो दिल्ली या गुडगाँव से ही हैं, कुछ हमारी तरह आज ही आये हैं, कुछ कल | पर जहाँ से अभी तक कोई भी बाहर ही नही गया ! कारण पूछा, तो कहने लगे बाहर क्या देखना है ? सब कुछ तो यहीं है, इतनी खूबसूरती तो यहीं बिखरी पड़ी है | इस रिजोर्ट के चारों तरफ कोई चारदीवारी नही है, बस बांस की खपच्चियों की दो-ढाई फुट ऊंची बाढ़ है, जिससे बगल का सारा जंगल भी इसी का भाग लगता है, और इस को और विशाल बना देता है |

इसी की बगल से दो कच्चे रास्ते, और आगे के गांवों की तरफ जा रहे है, कुछ लडके-लडकियाँ जिन्होंने शायद पहले कभी गाँव या जंगल नही देखा, घूमने जाना चाहते हैं, दिनेश का भतीजा जो रसोई के काम से शायद अब निवृत हो गया है, उनके साथ गाइड बनकर चलने को तैयार है, अपने साथ एक छड़ी और टॅार्च लेकर | छाता, छड़ी और टॅार्च ये ऐसी चीज़े हैं, जिन्हें लिए बिना कोई पहाड़ का वासी बाहर नही निकलता, जाने कब इनकी जरूरत पड़ जाये…. और इधर हम, लोगों से परिचय करते-करते रात के प्रोग्राम की उधेढ़-बुन में लगे हैं, रिजोर्ट के एक कोने की तरफ एक छोटा सा टेंट लग रहा है और उधर किचन के पीछे एक लड़का लकड़ियाँ फाड़ रहा है | दिनेश से पूछने पर पता चलता है आज इनके रिजोर्ट का एक साल पूरा होने की ख़ुशी में इन्होने अपने गाँव वालों और कुछ दूसरे जानकारों को पार्टी दी है, जिनसे साल भर बिज़नेस मिलता है | लकड़ियाँ रात को बोन-फायर के लिए काटी जा रही हैं, एक दूसरे किनारे पर डी-जे लग रहा है, कमरों के सामने की तरफ थोड़ी खुली सी जगह पर 3-4 लडके एक टेंट खड़ा कर रहे हैं, जो वैसा ही है, जैसा अक्सर मिलिट्री वालों के पास या फिर जंगल सफारी करने वालों के पास होता है | हमारे देखते ही देखते उन्होंने दो टेंट खड़े करके उनमे सामान रखना शुरू कर दिया- गद्दे, रजाई, टीवी, हीटर और बिजली का बल्ब ये देख कर के तो NCC के दिन याद आ गये | दिनेश से बात की, भैया हमे कमरा नही चाहिए, हमे तो यहीं सेट करो… आखिर एडवेंचर हो तो पूरा हो ! और फिर आखिर, जिनके लिए टेंट लगाया गया था, उन्हें टेंट के नुक्सान और कमरे के फायदे गिनाकर हमारा कमरा दे दिया गया | सबसे मज़ेदार तो उन्हें ये बताना था कि कई बार रात को यहाँ लक्कड़बग्गे भी आ जाते है, आखिर जंगल इसके साथ ही लगा हुआ है, इस बात ने मास्टर स्ट्रोक का काम किया और अपनी चाहत के अनुसार हम टेंट में शिफ्ट हो गये, आखिर जीवन में ऐसे मौके कितनी बार मिलते हैं…?

The Emerald Islands of Andaman and Nicobar-II

Our plan was to take a government ferry to Havelock and halt there for two days. For our return journey we planned to take the Makruzz back to Port Blair. We had to wake up at 5 in the morning to catch the ferry which leaves at 6:30 am. The harbour at Port Blair is lively even at these early hours as it caters to to the goods coming in from the mainland, as well as from nearby countries like Thailand. The ferry which we were to travel on, was operated by the Shipping Corporation of India. Our reserved seats in the first class compartment akin to the Indian Railways chair car coaches made our travel comfortable. During the journey to Havelock, you are free to go on deck. Travelers can hear the soothing sound of the waves hitting the craft and enjoy the vast expanse of the ocean. The blue sea, and the green emeralds dotting them, complement each other, and add to the experience. After standing on deck for 15 minutes, we decided to get a quick nap. When we woke up, the ferry was docking at the Havelock Jetty. After getting off the ship, we were picked up by a taxi our friends had arranged. We were dropped at our hotel, a government enterprise called the “Dolphin Hotel”. There are various grades of rooms available and it is important to reserve the rooms early.You may reserve the rooms through online payment on the website. Make sure to get a sea facing cottage. The drawback about Dolphin Hotel was that though it was set in a nice sea-facing location, it did not have a beach.There are a multitude of options to stay at in at Havelock, which suit all budgets.

Summer Road Trip – Badrinath Bound

The first glimpse of Badrinath is mesmerising!! It is nestled between the Nar and Narayan ranges. The towering Neelkanth lies just behind the Narayan Parvat on which the Badrinath shrine has been built. In the pristine morning sunlight and the crystal clear visibility of this place, this brilliant megalith has a strange magnetism. I think everyone who visits this place must be a little bit under its spell. [Pic: Neelkanth] The little settlement haphazardly built around the temple is but a random patchwork of colours in a vast magnificent landscape meant to command… dominate… enthral… hypnotise… inspire… all at once!

The lofty snow capped peaks in the backdrop of the gurgling Alaknanda far below … this is the place which has so much spirituality that you can almost reach out and touch it. Nothing is godlier than nature itself!
It really puts things into perspective. One senses how small, insignificant and petty are human egos, wants and conflicts in a scale this extravagant. It is at once uplifting and calming… a place I felt at peace with myself and the world at large. The Himalayas in their splendorous beauty! I’ll let the pictures do the talking…

Summer Road Trip – Birding in Lansdowne

The next two days are packed with bird watching. The commonest of the birds around command our attention for they are new to us plains dwellers. The ubiquitous Himalayan Bulbul, Blue Whistling Thrush and the Russet Sparrows are everywhere. In fact, we do not see any house sparrows there at all! The Streaked Laughing thrush is trying to catch our attention by peaking at us from just beyond the tree trunk. The Black headed Jay is wandering around as common as the Rock Pigeon in the plains!

Meanwhile, two green birds fly up to a nearby tree. There is a distinct yellow on them and the flight indicates woodpeckers. We hurry and try to get in position for at least a record shot to identify the specie. The Lesser Yellownape it is! Hard on the heels of this pair is another pair, this one of the Brown fronted Woodpecker… birds are raining down on us hard and fast! The Himalayan Woodpeckers are also plentiful. The Grey headed Woodpecker makes an appearance… I am very happy. The bird count for the trip is increasing rapidly.

Trip to Bhutan – Thimpu, Paro and Phuntsoling

We met our guide who took us to our destination, Galling Resort, about 3 kms away from town along a graveled road. Located on the banks of Paro chu; the property was tastefully constructed and painted in unique mud color ethnic Bhutanese style. The view from the balcony was breathtaking with Paro Chu rumbling right in front across the road, part of Paro beyond and finally the valley rising to meet the misty mountains that made the distant horizon. Anyone with an eye for the nature or a plain nature lover is bound to be enchanted by the natural beauty, landscape that would make not spending couple of days almost impossible. We did just that. The resort was warm, comfortable with a cozy lounge, wood paneled bedroom and comfortable attached bath. Our rooms had the same view as balcony and decided to keep the curtains drawn and windows opened so as to be part of the beautiful view.

Summer Road Trip – National Chambal Sanctuary, Morena

We take a turn around the gardens which are alive with bird calls. The abundant peafowl with their splendid trailing tails compete with the woodpecker, kingfisher, parakeets and the babblers for our attention. Everything else takes a back seat as the children are uncomfortable in the heat of the day. When the situation does not improve till late evening and after nightfall (the ACs are not working in spite of the gensets!), we have dinner at the FRH (which is very good) and fall back to Morena for the night.

Picking up our guide at Devri, we are at the boat pool on the river by 0530hrs. The much anticipated safari is underway with all of us on the edge of our seats, craning for the first glimpse of wildlife. At that point, the sun has just risen and is casting a golden glow on the ragged ravines on the banks and the tranquil waters of the Chambal. Suddenly, the calm breaks and a gentle giant breaks the surface with an elegant roll… the Gangetic Dolphin! It is a blind creature which does all its hunting and navigation by sonar located in the bump on its head. Cameras are ready but shots are very elusive since the dolphins are very erratic sightings.

Murti Kolakham (A treat for your five senses)

One advise to anybody booking WBFDC Murti Resort. Please make sure while booking that they are booking the rooms in the First floor of the resort and not the ones on ground floor, which are horrible. There are four large AC rooms on the first floor named Tista, Torsa, Murti and Jaldhaka. The rooms are well furnished with a big attached balcony where you can sit and enjoy the calmness of the environment around with only the gurgling sound of the ever busy river Murti.
