यह भी कहा जाता है कि जब-जब शासन बदला, तब-तब इस गुफा का विभिन्न प्रकार से उपयोग किया गया. कभी तो यहाँ सैनिकों के टुकड़ियाँ निवास करती थीं, तो कभी शरणार्थी-गण. यह भी समझा जाता है कि प्रत्येक शासन काल में यह गुफा उजड़ी और फिर नए सिरे से बसी. लोग यह भी मानतें हैं कि विश्व युद्ध के समय भी अंग्रेज सैन्य-बल यहाँ बसा हुआ था. इनका यह मतलब निकलता है कि मंडपेश्वर गुफाएं हमेशा से लोगों द्वारा आबादित रहीं हैं.

पर एक बात थी. कान्हेरी पहाड़ का वह स्थान बिलकुल वीरान था. इतना वीरान कि गुफाओं के अन्दर अकेले जाने में ऐसा महसूस हो कि कोई वहां पहले से मौजूद है, जो आपको निरंतर देख रहा है. उस वीरानी में मन में कई ख़याल आते हैं. जैसे कि क्या वहां जाने वाले का कोई सम्बन्ध पश्चात काल में उस गुफा से था और उसी सम्बन्ध के सहारे वह इस जीवन में भी वहां लौट कर आया हो? उस अंतिम गुफा में बैठ कर मैंने अपनी एक कविता का प्रथम अन्तरा लिखा. इस कविता के दूसरे अंतरे बाद में मुंबई के अन्य गुफाओं की यात्रा में पूर्ण हुए.

परन्तु मुझे आकर्षित किया उनके केलों ने. खूब सुन्दर और पुष्ट केले थे. मुझे केले खरीदता देख कर एक स्त्री ने मुझे समझाया कि मैं खीरे ले लूं और केले छोड़ दूँ. पर मैं कहाँ मानने वाला था. बस जैसे ही मैंने केले ख़रीदे, वृक्षों की डालों से तेजी-से उतर कर करीबन २०-२५ बंदरों ने मुझे घेर लिया. घबरा कर मैंने केले वहीँ जमीन पर फेंके, जो क्षण-भर में ही बंदरों द्वारा लूट लिए गए. अब उस डंडे से लैस व्यक्ति ने बंदरों को भगाने के लिए डंडा भाजना शुरू किया. बन्दर भाग गए. अब यह तो नहीं पता कि डंडे से भागे या केले चट कर के भागे. मैंने उन दोनों स्त्रियों को समझाने की कोशिश की कि जब यहाँ बंदरों का उत्पात है तो केले बेचते ही क्यों हो. दोनों स्त्रियाँ मुस्कुरायीं क्योंकि आज उन्हें एक और शहरी आदमी मिला था, जो जंगल में बिना देखे चलता था.

सुरक्षा-जाँच वाले कमरे की छत से जो रौशनी की बल्ब्स लटक रहे थे, उनकी डिजाईन देखने योग्य थी. जाँच के पश्चात पैगोडा की निचली मंजिल पर पहुंचे, जहाँ देखने के लिए कई स्थल थे. सीढ़ी के दोनों तरफ कलात्मक चबूतरे थे. एक चबूतरे पर बड़ा-सा घंटा लिए हुए मनुष्यों की प्रतिमाएं थीं और दुसरे चबूतरे पर घरियाल लिए हुए मनुष्यों की प्रतिमाएं थीं. इसलिए पहले को Bell-tower और दुसरे को Gong-tower कहा जाता था. यह दोनों स्थल लोगों में बहुत प्रिय थे क्योंकि इन पर चढ़ना मना नहीं था. लोग इन पर चढ़ कर अपनी सेल्फी ले सकते थे और साथ ही इन्हें बजा भी सकते थे.

“बालू-शाही”, “गुड़पारा” तथा “बूंदी के लड्डू” भी दिखे. इनमें गुड़पारा ही विशेष था. बालूशाही और बूंदी के लड्डू तो अब तक जाने कितनी बार और कितने जगहों पर खा चुका था कि अब वहां चखने में तो कोई दिलचस्पी थी नहीं. दिमाग तो तब भी शकरपारा में ही दौड़ रहा था. आखिर इतना शक्कर और गुड़ इस प्रदेश में आता कहाँ से है? याद करने की कोशिश की तो याद आया शिर्डी से शनि सिग्नापुर का वो रास्ता, जिसके दोनों तरफ ईख के बड़े बड़े खेत देखे थे. गाँव वालों ने सडकों के दोनों तरफ ईख-के-रस की दुकानें लगायीं थीं. हर दुकान का नाम चाहे कुछ भी हो, पर टाइटल एक ही था..”रसवंती”.

We were among the hundreds of hopeful Indians, boarding the ship, in search of better life and future. Since we had paid the lowest fare, we were directed to the lower deck. The cabin allotted to us had ten other passengers-all young, and we knew a couple of them. Some of them were going to Germany and France, while the rest of us were bound for London.

My wife was the only female in the lower deck. Being all of almost the same age, we got along famously. All of us first time travelers, feeling seasick. The sea was pretty rough, and the food on the ship was disappointing. But we didn’t mind. The prospect of getting to London kept us cheerful.
Aden was the first port of call. And we went around the town with other passengers. Every one wrote a postcard to their families

A UNESCO World Heritage Site is just past a short boat ride from The Gateway of India itself. If you don’t already know, the Elephanta Caves were designed between the 5th and 8th centuries. The 7 caves (5 Hindu + 2 Buddhist) have survived centuries of turmoil. The 6-7 metre-tall Trimurthi sculpture is a remnant of unfading architecture. The resemblance to the Elora caves in terms of carvings is striking.
