Pokaran

Pokaran is a city in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan set amidst rocky, sandy and five salt ranges. Pokaran meaning the place of five mirages stands on ancient trade route that carried salt, silk and spices to Persia and beyond in the glorious past. It is en route both from Jodhpur to Jaislamer and Bikaner to Jaislamer.
One of the attractions here is Fort Pokaran that offers traditional royal hospitality for those who wish to stay there. Besides admiring the heritage building whose architecture is an interesting blend of Rajput and Mughal styles, one can go on jeep and camel-cart safaris, engage in bird watching and spotting desert wildlife or watch traditional craftsmen at work. Rajasthani cultural programs and dances are also organised for the benefit of visitors. Pokaran also houses the shrine of the deity Ramdeoji. Pokaran can be reached by road from Jodhpur, Jaisalmer or Bikaner and has a railway station. The nearest airport is at Jodhpur.
