Delhi to Dehradun & Sahastradhara by Road

I have visited Dehradun a lot of times and mostly by train only. As the road condition (Ghaziabad, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee) is not very good and traffic is very high, the road travel is always very exhausting.

This time, me and 1 of my friends, Nishant planned to go for a 1 night trip to Dehradun, travelling by own vehicle. But we decided not to travel via Meerut, Muzaffarnagar etc. Instead we decided to go via Baraut, Shamli, Sahranpur.

13.05.2010, Delhi to Dehradun , Driver: Nishant (Solo), Accompanying: Myself

We started our trip at 6.30 am from my Home in Bhajanpura, which is very close to Loni More.  Soon, we were out of Delhi, heading towards Baghpat. Road was OK and traffic was very minimal. After Baghpat, the traffic started increasing. This was a single road only and a lot of villages are there on both side of Road, so we were carefull in driving. Around 7.45 we reached Baraut. Normally at baraut, there is lot of traffic jam and you need some 15 minutes to cross this very small stretch of some half a KM. But we were fortunate enough that road was clear and crossed Baraut in 2  minutes.

After Baraut, the journey became very pleasant, as day was not very hot. On both sides of Road, lot of mango trees, full of Mangoes were there. Traffic was very minimal and we were running on a speed of 90 km/hr easily.

Around 9 we reached Shamli and around 10 we reached Saharanpur. After crossing Saharanpur, we took a halt at a Dhaba and had our breakfast.

After a break of 30 minutes, we again started for Last 70km Lap of our journey. After crossing some 40 KMs, hills started and road was also good.

We reached Dehradun by 11.45. We checked in our hotel and took a quick rest for 15 minutes. After it, we continued for our work. In evening, both of us went to Rajpur Road for a long walk, had our dinner there only and late night returned back to our hotel.

Next morning, we got up at 6.30 and started for Sahastradhara, which is 17 Kms from Dehradun. We reached there in approx 20 minutes. This is small fall of water. View was very good and minimal people were there. We took bath in fall and this was much releiving from heat of Delhi.

After spending 1hour there, we came back to our hotel.

In afternoon, we started back to delhi from Same route.

this was a pleasant 2 days journey, which we enjoyed a lot.

This route is better than the Meerut, Muzzaffarnagar one, as traffic is very less here. But the Dhabas are very minimal and the route is bit risky in late night hours.

    Dear Pravesh,

this route is very risky at night….if something wrong happen with your car….or u get stuck in jam especially at night u cant hope anyone for help out there ya route is good and very less traffic is there and u cant take a stop midway here coz there is nthhng except small dhabas…….

    Mahesh,

    Sorry no pics this time.

    Sameer,

    U r right.
That is why I have mentioned in last line of my post.

The route should be avoided in night.

Pravesh , I am just back from Mussoorie. Every 3 months I visit Dehradun by my own car. This time I visited during the monsoon. We had to go this time by Shamli route , but due to heavy rainfall we went by the same old National Highway. Even the condition of NH was bad at the monsoon time. Shastradhara is always a all time favourite.

    Hi Pravesh,

this seems to be quite a convenient route, given the time span of about 5 hours. And the fact that the route passes through Shamli adds a mysterious facet to it ( our family being a big Ruskin Bond fan).

Thanks for acquainting us with this route and of course, an interesting write up about it.

    Auro.

    Hi all
One can make slite chage in route. From Delhi use GT Karnal Road and from Bhalgadh chock about 25 km from Delhi, turn to right for Bagpat road. This way you will bypass Loni and bagpat and will reach to Baraut. This road is much much better than Loni Bagpat stratch. From Baraut to shamli, sharanpur the road is very good. From sharanput on can directly go to Dehradun or you can First go to Harbartpur (visit Ponta Sahib) and then to Deheradun. This route is more beautifull and scienic.

Thanks Parvesh. I knew about this route all through but never made it., though I wanted to try it at least once. Probably next time.

Thanks Deepspot. Just a clarification, when you say ‘G T Road’,
    – do you you mean “NH58′ , the normal Delhi-Meerut road. How far is Bhalgadh Chowk from say ‘Mohan Nagar’ or ‘Ghaziabad Bus Stand’. And since we are going east, we would take ‘left’ and not ‘right’.

Pravesh – Good hotel reviews are hard to find so write one if you feel like about the hotel you stayed.

    • Sahil says:

      Dear Mr. Nandan ,

From your side , it is much better to take the route – Loni- Bagpat – Baraut – Shamli – Saharanpur – Dun.
If you come towards Bahalgarh and then turn right , it will waste a lot of time for you coming towards Bahalgarh. If you really want to come this side , then the much better route is Delhi- Panipat – Shamli – Saharanpur – Dun , as by taking this route one can byepass Bagpat and Baraut and straight away reach Shamli.

The DELHI-Modinagar-Meerut bypass- partapur-Khatauli-Muzaffarnagar-Roorkee stretch is now better due to Toll patches at approx. 170 kms. Can do in 3 1/2 4 hours..

Delhi-Modinagar 45 kms. Takes about an hour .. Dabur-Mohan Nagar-Ghaziabad-Murad Nagar-Modinagar strech is all crowded at most times of the day though there is a bypass after Mohan Nagar now after hindon bridge via Raj Nagar Extension Housing project which saves you atleast 20 mins.

Modinagar Modipuram Toll Gate 25 kms is a good strech with flyovers on the partapur bypass meerut and you can do 80-90 kmph here.

Modipuram Muzaffarnagar 50 kms strech is the Best !! Once you pay the Toll you can cruise at 100+ kmph and pass the sakauti Tanda Rail overbridge and stop at Khatauli bye-pass @ Cheetal Grand.. This is Must Stop.. Excellent food and ambience/service. Muzaffarnagar bye-pass is also good.

Muzaffar Nagar Roorkee 50 kms is a single road with oncoming traffic and just 2 lanes as soon as you exit MZN bye-pass.. 4 laning is in process in patches and will take another 2 years !!! Road is bad in patches and to add to it is the Trucks line for Uttrakhand Border tax. Easily 01 hour until you reach Roorkee.

Overall 4 hours for 170 kms with a stop.. Safe strech though avoid Night driving and Kanwariya season in July..

Return Roorkee Delhi Trip .. 170 kms .. 4 hours

Roorkee Muzaffar nagar bye-pass 50 kms . Road is not too good which is bad in patches. Being 2 lane and loads of traffic saharanpur/haridwar/Rishikesh/Dehradun/Mussorie it can be quite bad.
Be careful of speedbreakers at Gurkul Narsan and Barla which have no markings and appear out of nowhere.

Muzaffarnagar Meerut : 75 kms is an excellent stretch and can be done in an 0100 0115 hours. Once you start off from the MZN by-pass via khatauli bye-pass, Toll plaza at Mawana crossing, Modipuram, partapur meerut bye-pass its a great hassle free stretch with speed upto 100 kmph.
Lots of food stops on this stretch starting with Cafe Midway/Mc Donalds/Haldirams/Bikano before Katauli and Cheetal Grand once you pass Khatauli.

Meerut Delhi: 50 kms.. 0115 0200 hours . This is the worst strecth with you slowing down from the word go as soon as you exit from the Partapur byepass. Modinagar stretch for sure takes 30 mins minimum sue to bazaars esp. after 4 pm until 10 pm. If its the sugarcane / marriage season then Lord may help you !!! Then you have until Murad nagar canal of clear but packed traffic before you hit the Ghaziabad stretch to crawl again.. Take a right at the Hapur Mod tri-junction red Signal. This will take you via Raj Nagar extention housing societies.. and again take a right at the signal tri-junction after the traffic Triangle.. This is a pontoon makeshift bridge for LMV/2 wheelers and takes you straight to Mohan Nagar After this is smooth though packed traffic of Autos, tempos, buses, trcuks until you reach Delhi Border.

Minimum 4 hours for this trip !!!!

NO CNG on this route, though plenty of petrol pumps and Dhabas

    Cheers !!

Delhi- Meerut- Muzaffarnagar-Roorkee- Dehradun is the busiest route for Delhi to Dehradun. I have driven on this route but only starting mornings. How safe is this route for night driving- say starting from Delhi around midnight is OK? We are about 8 families and plan to hire a bus for 3- 4 days to roam around in Dehradun area. A a few families reaching airport at 11 PM and and hence can start only around 11PM from airport.
