A Trip to Omkareshwar Jyotirling Day – 2

Next Day (06.02.2011) we woke up in the morning at 07:00 AM and after getting fresh, having bath we started for Mamleshwar temple which was at a walking distance from our guest house. This is an ancient temple, there are 7-8 other temples in the Mamleshwar Temple campus (Please note that Omkareshwar temple and Mamleshwar temple are different and both are considered as jyotirlingas, but even between these two Omkareshwar temple is given more importance, they are located on opposite banks of holy river Narmada, steam boats are used to go on either side also two bridges are there to cross the river). There are monkeys in plenty here and be cautious, they may atch the bags from your hands.

After 3-4 hours wandering around omkareshwar we went on the ghat to have a holy dip in the narmada, but the water was so cold that Kavita (my wife) and Sanskriti decided not to take bath and sit only on the wall made on the ghat. Me and my 4 yrs son took bath and enjoyed the cool water.

On the Ghat

After spending one hour on the ghat we came back to our guest house at 03:00 PM and checked out from there. We then started our return journey.

On the way back from omkareshwar at 4 km in the village Shivkothi there is a ashram of Swami Shivoham Bharti in the name Namah Shivay Mission. Here free of cost food is always available for everyone.

Around 40 KM from Omkareshwar there is a beautiful temple of Bheru Baba, We stopped there and took darshan there.

    Hi,
I am visiting omkareshwar and ujjain this january 4th week 2015 along with my aged parents, Via Indore.
the problem is my mother had undergone for knee replacement surgery, and can’t walk much distance and can’t climb much steps, but after reading some of the posts in this site, i am worrying about the tour. i would like to know the following few things.
    1. whether is there any transport facility upto to temple premises or not,
    2. if no transport is there, then min distance to walk for darshan.
    3. is there any short cut facility having with out steps for physically challenged persons to dharshan omkareshwar.

pls any body of you help me in guiding for safe and pleasant dharshan for my parents.
    Thank U
    Srinivas, Hyderabad

    Dear Srinivas,

    Thanks for commenting here.

    1. No there is no any transport facility to reach till the temple at both the places. One has to walk on foot for reaching to the temple. Even in Ujjain Mahakaleshwar Temple you may have to wait in queue for a long time. Mahakaleshwar temple is located below the ground level so while entry one has to disembark the steps and while exit climbing the combination of steps and ramp. But I thing she will do it with your help. At Omkareshwar one has to cross a cantilever bridge afoot.

    2. The walking distance at both the places is 0.5 to 0.8 KM approx.

    3. I haven’t yet seen any such shortcuts.

    4. But I will suggest you to take her, any how the things get’s manages. By taking intermediate rests and with the support of you people, she will manage to do it.

    Thanks.

    Dear Mukesh,

Your info about Sri Omkareshwar is very helpful.

I want to visit Sri Omkareshwar so I may reach Khandwa in the late evening 730PM by train.

    1. What type of transport do we get for Omkareshwar from Khandwa Rly station at that time?
    2. Where should we stay at reasonable cost? Where can we have online booking?
    3. Is Omkareshwar and Mamleshwaram temple nearby and managable by walk?
    4. Is Mandhat Parvat Parikrama possible and what significance does it have?

May I have your contact number so that I may have some more guidance, if necessary?

    Thanks,

    Vijay Kumar

      Hello Neeraj,

Thanks for visiting the post and liking it. Without knowing your place, it would not be possible for me to help you on route front. You can search trains from your place to either for Khandwa or Ujjain on any Indian Railway website. The distane between Ujjain and Omkareshwar is 130 Kms approx.

      Thanks,

  • S.RAVINDRANATH says:

Dear Shri Mukesh. Nice write-up. I would like to visit Omkareshwar some time later this year. I require for the following information, if you can provide it will be great.

    1. How frequent are the buses from Indore and how long it may take? 78 kms means, with halts in between and a bit of ghat road, it should take about 3-3 1/2 hours, I guess.

    2. Are there frequent buses from Omkareshwar to Khandwa or Maheshwar?
If you do not have answers, where can I get the info?

    3. What are the stay arrangement at Omkareshwar?

  • Mukesh Bhalse says:

    Dear Ravindranath,

At the outset a lot of thanks to you for reading and liking the post. Now coming to your queries:

    1. Bus frequency between Indore and Omkareshwar is very good and yes your guess is perfect, it takes 3 hrs from Indore to Omkareshwar to and fro.

    2. Actually the place called the gateway to Omkareshwar is Mortakka which is located exactly on the Indore Khandwa highway and also this place is equidistant from Ind and Knw. So for Mortakka bus frequency is very good from Indore and Khandwa. From Mortakka, Omkareshwar is further 13-14 kms for which you may need to wait for some time.

    3. There are many Hotels and Dharmshalas in Omkareshwar but the cheaper though best option is Shri Gajanan Seva Sansthan Guest House. There is no any provision of advance booking here, but normally there always remains the possibility of getting a good accommodation here.

Hope the above information will serve your purpose.

    Thanks,
