From the Editor – Bollywood’s Musical Tribute to Travel

â€œFocus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.â€

This quotation by Greg Anderson is just one amongst the many floating around that glorify journey over the destination. Symbolically speaking, these quotations probably constitute great wisdom but, literally, I take them with a pinch of salt. While I am fond of travelling, it is the lure of greener pastures that makes me get up and go. The journey, except if travelling by train, is a grueling experience, by the end of which my hair is disheveled, my legs are stiff, and my tummy feels weird. I am not, by any measure, a glamorous traveler. If travelling with friends and family, there are many ways to entertain. But if travelling alone, thereâ€™s also a teeny chance that the journey can be boring especially if you are travelling by road at night.

I have four issues that spoil the fun for me: I canâ€™t sit still for too long, I canâ€™t read in a moving vehicle, I canâ€™t sleep while travelling, and I have motion sickness. But for people like me, there is one way to beat the pain of the journey. And that is music. I am so thankful to the thoughtful person who first divined the idea of pocket transistors. Even though, you can hardly see any transistors around today, their descendents, the mp3 players and the iPod, are essential travel accessories for many. And I am eternally grateful to Bollywood for giving us songs that not only inspire you to travel but also give your journey a rhythm. Remember the tick-tock tick-tock of the horsesâ€™ hooves (even when the hero is driving a car), paired with the romantic nonk-jhonk of the smug heroine and a mischievous hero? Well, who doesnâ€™t!

But my favorite childhood travel song was one from the movie Son of India, released years before I was born. It used to play on every 15th August and 26th January and featured a rather handsome little Sajid Khan (not to be confused with the Sajid Khan we see on the TV today) and his cute dog, off to participate in the Republic Day parade, I think.

We’ll talk about more songs but before I get carried away, let me annouce the much-awaited awards.

Coming back to the music. Those were the days when patriotism rode high with the pride of a successful freedom struggle still fresh and a series of wars with the neighbouring countries. Aao bachchon tumhein dikhayein jhanki Hindustan ki was another travel song with generous sprinkling of patriotism or should I say the other way round. The song has impeccable rhyme and rhythm and the pace ensures that you cannot stop yourself from tapping your feet.

And then is this song that is very close to my heart because of the beautiful pictures it paints with its powerful imagery. Soulful playback singing with just-enough background music virtually transports you to a completely different world â€“ one where â€œcolourful birds bring a message of hopeâ€. This legendary song was Aa chal ke tujhe main le ke chaloo. I wanted to embed it here but wasnâ€™t able to locate its official video. But do listen to it if you want to feel the magic.

Suhana safar aur yeh mausam haseen is another splendid number that is capable of filling any travellerâ€™s heart with the longing for the hills. A sauve Dilip Kumar, intrigued and overwhelmed by the playful natural beauty of the mountains is a sight so endearing that no travel post that claims to talk about Bollywoodâ€™s contribution to travel is complete without a mention of this song. There were several other gems around this time such as Hum hain rahi pyaar ke featuring a vagabond Dev Anand, driving his dilapidated truck, making light of his miseries.

Travel so far was mostly with a purpose, related to work, in search for employment, religious, or more popularly, symbolic. So we see a host of songs that compare life with travel, such as Zindagi ka safar hai yeh kaisa safar, zindagi ke safar mein guzar jaate hain jo makam, Zindagi ek safar hai suhana and so on.

Travel for the sake of travel wasnâ€™t introduced into Bollywood till comparatively recently. The first instance that I remember was when a desperate Simran, driven by her destiny, bargains with her father to let her travel across Europe before they left for India. The result was the record-breaking and all-time favorite movie of a majority of Indians, Dilwale Dulhaniya le jayenge (DDLJ).

During this time, a tribute to travel came from the Singer Shaan. The song, though not a part of a movie, is still as popular and talks of travel through its lyrics, music, and cinematography.

Some years later, Dil Chahta hai sealed the fate of Travel in Bollywood. Travel had now transformed into a therapeutic, rejuvenating, guilt-free activity, instrumental in carrying the plot especially in the coming-of-age films.

The recent movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara glorifies travel as a means of overcoming your fears, getting to know yourself better, and irking your girlfriend to no end.

However, my all-time favorite travel song is one from the movie Rock On! that brings forth the exploratory spirit of travel, the courage to set out without a shore in sight, and the determination to carry on despite your misfortunes. Sindbad the Sailor is perhaps the best song to leave you with.

Vibha – You reminded me of my primary school days where a little boy in class 2 is singing this song(nanha munna).. before school assembly, on 15 Aug and is given a book, the first ever prize of his life…. well that was little silentsoul.

Songs, specially bollywood songs are permanent companions of all ghumakkars and I dont remember having gone to any ghumakkari without songs…. so much so when we first went on scooters, we tied a two-in-one to the scooter… and heard Punjabi filmi songs while travelling on Rishikesh-Devprayag road… those songs became our life long partners for life (like one by Shamshad Begum – Bhanve bol te bhanve na bol…ve channa vass ankhiyan de kol)..

Fest (Delhi College of Engineering) and was awarded ‘THE BEST’ among the best in the history of DU by the jury.

@ Vibha – My habits while traveling is same as yours except motion sickness. I can not sleep while sitting , headache starts if I read while traveling etc etc …

Many congratulations to receive honor of the featured authors of the month. I am a big fan of your posts and continuously reading your posts since the beginning. For me you were the most deserving person to receive this honor, and you received it.

Your writing skills, Acceptability, positive attitude and Devotion & dedication for ghumakkari are some special things which made you the twinkling star on the sky of ghumakkar, that too in such a sort span.

Undoubtedly, the Manali……….. was a superb series and the best one among all other stories written by you so far. I have read every bit of this series and enjoyed it thoroughly and most important thing is that I had decided to visit Manali and Rohtang in coming June, only after reading your Rohtang post and inspired by it……………..It was incredible.

I have been on road for close to 200K KMs and the songs have been through with me. I prefer Radio over a canned list and if nothing, sing-along (either as part of a group or a Antakshri or just alone) is what I fall back on. Rah pe rahtein hain…

A great editorial indeed.
But i would like to express that train travel still instills a feeling of nostalgia amongst many of us. The luxury of looking at the vast expanse of open fields and distinct landscapes and cultures zipping by is out of this world. Travelling with friends and family is always fun but that occasional trip alone is also sometimes very refreshing. It allows you to be with yourself only…to hear your inner voice. To feel independent…without any responsibilities. Plus…if you are lucky…Cupid might make somethng work between you and a lovely co-passenger. :)

  Thanks Prashant, Travelling by train is also the most comfortable in my opinion. You can at least walk around and stretch your legs. I especially hate travelling by plane. Travelling with friends and family and travelling alone both have their own charms and challenges. I prefer a good mix of both…

मनाली की सिरीज़ हमें (मुकेश तथा मुझे) इतनी ज्यादा पसंद आई थी की उस सिरीज़ की हर पोस्ट हम दोनों ने साथ में पढ़ी थी, और फ़ोटोज़ तो कम से कम चार चार बार देखे थे, और बस आपकी पोस्ट पढ़ते पढ़ते ही हमने स्वयं भी मनाली एवं रोहतांग जाने का मन पक्का कर लिया, मेरे ख्याल से किसी पोस्ट की सफलता का इससे बड़ा मापदंड नहीं हो सकता की कोई आपकी पोस्ट से प्रेरित होकर तत्काल उस जगह पर जाने का इरादा पक्का कर ले. आपकी कहानी को माह की विशिष्ट कहानी चुने जाने पर मेरी और से बहु बहुत बधाई.

It all started with an early 60’s film called “Junglee” shot in gorgeous colour way on amazingly beautiful locations in Kashmir and great music. It was a landmark film which forever changed the way films were made in India.

However, I do not agree that travel for the sake of travel is a recent phenomenon in Hindi films. Way back in 1967, there was a Raj Kapoor starrer called “Around the World” in which Raj Kapoor travels around the world with just $ 8 in his pocket which was the maximum amount of foreign exchange permitted in those days.

  Thanks for your comment DL. It took me a while to respond to your comment because I first wanted to confirm my theory about Around the World and Sangam. While Around the World is about Travel, I don’t consider that it is for the sake of Travel because Raj Kapoor travels for business. But in case of Sangam, they travel to celebrate their Honeymoon, which I guess can be termed as Travel for the sake of Travel. So thanks for correcting me :)
  
  I tried searching for Aa Chal ke Tujhe on youtube but wasn’t able to find a channel such as Shemaroo, T-series, and Eros who have purchased the right to broadcast the song, so didn’t provide a link to it. Let me know if you can find such a channel. I would love to embed it into my post.

    Probably the first Indian movie which featured a foreign location was Shantaram’s “Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani” (1946) which had China as its backdrop though I do not know if it was shot there or in a studio in India. With tiny budgets and stringent forex regulations, shooting abroad was out of the question in the pre-liberalisation era.
    
    However, in the 60’s and the 70’s several movies (probably bankrolled by NRIs) were shot abroad, like Singapore, Love in Tokyo, Aman, Poorab aur Paschim, An Evening in Paris, Night in London, Aankhen, Spy in Rome, etc., but they weren’t really about travel. Dev Anand, always ahead of his times, shot movies like Johny Mera Naam, Heera Panna, Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Prem Pujari. My favourite travel film from that period is “Bombay to Goa”, starring a raw Amitabh Bachchan and (would you believe it) Aruna Irani.

Nice linking ghumakkari to Bollywood. In fact we discovered a Bollywood link in our Thai trip, which we would highlight in a subsequent part.

‘Ham hai raahi pyaar ke’ is an all time favourite as also others as mentioned in the post.

Some that came to my mind while reading the post are –

चलते चलते मुझे कोई मिल गया था , चलो दिलदार चलो चाँद के पार, चलते चलते मेरे ये गीत, हम भी चले तुम भी चलो, चलते चले लहरों के पार याद नहीं दिन है की रात, etc. etc.

But you know what, the Bollywood typically starts with the promise of a normal journey but soon it turns into out-of-the-world, personal type of fantastical sojourns – where moon and stars and horizon and the beloved’s home next door, everything appears to be equidistant :-)

It then becomes evident that the journey was not meant for a regular type of Ghumakkar in the first place :-)

विभा जी ……बहुत ही शानदार हिंदी सिनेमा से प्ररित संगीतमय आपका सम्पादकीय लेख मुझे बहुत पसंद आया….| सफ़र और संगीत का बहुत पुराना रिश्ता रहा हैं | जब कभी भी हम लोग अपने मित्रों के संग घूमने जाया करते थे तब हमेशा एक छोटा सा टेपरिकार्डर हमेशा साथ रहता था और उसमे हमेशा बालीवुड के पुराने नगमे जैसे “आज मौसम बड़ा बेईमान हैं जरा ” आदि सुना करते थे, अब उसकी जगह मोबाईल ने ले ली हैं ……| हम लोग ट्रेन पर फिल्माया गाया आराधना फिल्म का स्व.राजेश खन्ना अभिनीत “मेरे सपनो की रानी कब आएगी तू ” और शाहरुख खान अभिनीत “छैया-छैया” कभी नहीं भूल सकते |
फीचर ऑथर और फीचर स्टोरी चुनने और इस शानदार लेख के लिए बहुत बहुत धन्यवाद…..|

मनु जी…. आपने बहुत ही कम समय पर घुमक्कड़ अपने लेख और टिप्पणी से एक अमिट छाप छोड़ी हैं…….और इस पद के एक सच्चे हक़दार भी हो… और मैं अगस्त माह फीचर ऑथर बनने पर ह्रदय से आपको बहुत-बहुत बधाई देता हू……..| लिखते रहो….हम पढ़ते रहेगे ऐसे ही….

  रितेश जी मै शर्मिन्दा हूं अपनी एक भूल के लिये । ये गलती या कोई वैसे नही हुआ बल्कि सिर्फ भूल में छूट गया क्योंकि आपके साथ मेरी भी फीचर्ड आथर की घोषणा से मै और परिवार वाले अभिभूत थे तो भूल में मै आपको बधाई देना छूट गया । मै आपका बडा सम्मान करता हूं और आपकेा अपने मित्रो में शामिल मानता हूं
  
  कभी कभी शादी के बुलावे में ताउ चाचे को चिठठी देनी भूल जाते हैं जबकि सारी दुनिया को बुलावा जाता है सो ऐसा ही मुझसे हुआ है इसलिये इसे एक भूल मानकर क्षमा करें क्योंकि हम सब इंसान हैं और गलती इंसानो से ही होती है
  
  आपकी ये ही नही हर यात्रा जानकारी से परिपूर्ण होती है । मै आपको घुमक्कड के ऐसे लेखक के रूप में भी जानता हूं जो इतने मनोयोग से लिखते और घूमते हैं कि कहीं किसी भी तरह जो लेखक का लेख लिखने का मकसद है उसमें कमी ना रहे और पाठक को सब कुछ मिले

अब जाकर हिन्दी लिखने वाले मेरे पसंदीदा लेखक को यह मान मिला है आपको यह मान मिला है इसकी मुझे भी बहुत खुशी हुई, आधा वर्ष बीत चुका है घुमाक्कर ऑफ दी इयर की दौड में आप सबसे आगे चल रहे हो इसी लग्न से लिखते रहे,

Thanks Vibha for the very nice editorial. Travel and Music are very deeply co-related. Sometimes I keep listening songs for continuous 6-7 hours during the train/bus journey. And while driving, music never stops :)

Hi Vibha,
I am not a Gumakkar member, but certainly read the stories that you publish from time to time. Travel stories i read so far in Ghumakkar are certainly interesting, enlightening and full of information; the use of language is also outstanding in some of the posts. But after reading this post, I must say that it’s one of the best posts i have read so far on travel. The way you related music and travel is outstanding, and your use of language is simple, conversational and yet sophisticated. Love the way you unfolded different eras of Bollywood and how the industry uses musical mastery to project travel ideas.

Thanks again for the post. I wish you all the luck for future… :)
