Tehri dam , harnessing the waters of two important Himalayan rivers – Bhagirathi and Bhilangana. It has a height of 855 feet, making it the 5th tallest dam in the world. The Tehri dam has witnessed continuous questioning and protest by various people, including the noted environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna. The relocation of more than 100,000 people from the area has led to protracted legal battles over resettlement rights, and ultimately resulted in the project’s delayed completion. In the below photograhs we can see the damaged houses.
It will be over killing if I write too much on it , photographs are self explanatory.
We went to Chamba about 5 odd years back and we made a day trip to Tehri. We drove to parts of Old Tehri and it was haunting to see vacant houses, sort of disturbing so we turned back.
Gangotri is long pending, probably when I do that I should go to Tehri and look at this technology marvel.
Its True Nandan, still local people are struggling for resettlement. One can visit Dam also but with a prior santion for that a request letter is to be sumitted . When ever you plan Gangotri visit Uttarkashi also.If you required any information on that route please let me know.

Mr. Semwal,
I’m planning a trip to Tehri Dam in about two weeks. To whom must a request letter be submitted? I am performing a research project for my master’s dissertation on Indian water distribution and would like to interview relocated residents or perhaps dam officials, if possible. Any advice?
Thanks!
Dear Rachel,
To visit the dam, you have to take the permission from GM – Tehri Hydro Development Corporation( THDC) , New Tehri.
