In May 11, we were on the Alaska Cruise and Victoria, Canada was one of the Stops.
“ Buchart Gardens “; “ Buchart Gardens “ ; “ Buchart Gardens “ was every one’s call. So we also paid a visit to these so very famous Gardens. No matter how many “ Superlative Adjectives†one was to use for these Gardens, it is impossible to describe its beauty in words. This horticultural wonderland reinvigorates the soul since it highlights and showcases the splendor and beauty of Nature. I have no reservations when I say that a more peaceful, tranquil and enjoyable experience cannot be had.
These internationally acclaimed gardens, located about 23 km North of Victoria, Vancouver ( Canada) were the brain-child of the Butcharts – Robert and his wife Jenny. The Butcharts arrived in Victoria over a 100+ years ago and this area was used for mining limestone until the Butcharts began planting trees, shrubs and plants that they had collected from around the world on their travels. They gradually landscaped the deserted eyesore into the resplendent Sunken Garden, opening it for public display in 1904.
The gardens – still the Family property is run by the Butcharts’ grandson. The Garden is visited by over 500,000 visitors a year. It also displays more than a million plants . Over the years, a Rose Garden, Italian Garden, and Japanese Garden have been added. The Sunken Garden is the most beautiful one.
These 55 acres of gardens have a coffee house, picnic grounds, fountains and restaurants that would be anybody’s delight . A very good lunch, dinner, and afternoon tea are offered in the Dining Room Restaurant in the historic residence of the Butcharts – still in its very Original Form. Afternoon and high teas are also served in the Italian Garden .
We were also told that on summer evenings, the gardens are illuminated with a variety of softly colored lights. June – September has free musical entertainment – Monday through Saturday evenings. One can even watch fireworks displays on Saturdays in July/ August. In December one will be able too can enjoy “The Magic of Christmas” where thousands of lights and season decorations are put up.
TO SAY THE LEAST, A VISIT TO THE BUTCHART GARDENS IS WITHOUT DOUBT A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE.
