Girnar Mountain :- The Highest Peak in Gujarat,The Ultimate Experience.

Jain Temples from Amba Mata temple.

Jain temples on Girnar, on the right side below is Girnar taleti ( foothills) , and behind those two mountains is Junagadh, Superb view.

Let me tell you something about Guru Gorakhnath.

Gorakhanath was an 11th to 12th century  Hindu nath yogi, connected to Shaivism as one of the two most important disciples of Guru Matsyendranath. The Nath Tradition underwent its greatest expansion during the time of Gorakhanath. He produced a number of writings, scriptures and even today is considered the greatest of the Naths. In his life he did lot of miracles just to teach real spiritualism and bhakti.

Guru Gorakhnath Temple :- Upon the sacred height at GIRNAR there are many temples . The hill consists of 5 principal peaks, the highest of which, with an altitude of 3,666 feet, is associated with the name of Gorakhnath. Above the shrine of Amba Mata there is another three feet square, dedicated to the great disciple of Guru  Matsyendrandth. It is said that Devi Parvati, in search ofLord  Siva, dwelt at Girnar, and that she continued to sing the praises of her Lord, until  at this spot, he finally showed himself to her. In the  legends Girnar is represented as a noted place of resort and a favourite haunt of Gorakhnath. He used to stay here and his dhuni still exists.

Ready to start over again

Coming little down around 50 steps

On the left side of the Amba Mata temple there is a platform where people make queue and wait. That is last place where you get something to eat and drink……………………….

Here comes Guru Gorakhnath Temple.

At Guru Gorakhnath Temple , we relaxed a bit. Still Lord Dattatreya to go.

Lord Gorakhnath’s dhumi inside that orange temple……………….

Actual place where Guru Gorakhnath used to meditate

Guru Gorakhnath and his great foot prints.

Now where is Lord Dattatreya temple . Oh my God ! can you see …………………Moon is nearer than this……………………Apart from this where is the way i can’t find any stairs from here .how to go there ???????

Lord Dattatreya Temple - from Guru Gorakhnath temple but where is the way to go there, i cant see.

Still no clue .

A close up from Guru Gorakhnath Temple

We have to climb down 2000 steps and then climb 1800 up steps from backside

While climbing down the temple goes up

still to go

आज तोह बचे की जान ले ली . come on Vishal you can do it. just a little bit extra…………………..

Farthest down , now can't see the temple.

When Farthest down there is one entrance to Lord Dattatreya Temple in the left and Kamandad kunda to right.

Now these were hard core rocks with no vegetation

Once again temple is in sight.

Let me tell you something about Lord Dattatreya :-

Lord Dattatreya or Datta is a deity encompassing the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, collectively known as Trimurti. In the Nath tradition, Lord Dattatreya is recognized as an incarnation of Shiva and as the Adi-Guru (First Teacher) of the Adinath Sampradaya of the Nathas.

Dattatreya was born to the sage Atri, who had been promised by Parameshwar, that He, Parameshwar would be incarnated as his son. Since Parameshvara subsumes all three members of the trimurti, Dattatreya is at once the incarnation of Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma.

Datta left home at an early age to wander in search of the Absolute Truth. He seems to have spent most of his life wandering in the area between and including Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, and into Gujarat as far as the Narmada River. He attained realization at a town called Ganagapura in Karnataka. The original footprints of Datta are believed to be located on the lonely peak at Girnar, Junagadh. So these were the footprints for which we had come to have darshan.

We reached there around 1.45 pm. There took darshan and started back.

At Last The goal is reached . phew................

Scene from girnar

Peak of Godess Mahakali.

Some enjoying moments in sheer tiredness.

While climbing down…………..

Sameer with Sadhu staying in Girnar.

While Climbing again - Lord DattatreyaTemple and Mahakali Peak.

While coming back , the jain temples from Amba Mata , still 6000 steps to go down.

this time breaks were bigger.

Nearing Jain temples, still 5000 to go........

Sonali and Sameer while climbing down - No expressions left

Bhavnath Temple Dwar

Lord Bhavnath

More About Girnar :-Every year, between the 1st and the 10th of January, a Girnar Climbing Competition is held by Gujarat Government. Anyone who climbs up 5,500 feet (1,700 m) within 2 hours gets a certificate from the Government of Gujarat, and the winner gets lots of prizes. Now it has been made a national sporting event. Can you imagine the record time of fastest person ????? you will not believe . Its just 50 minutes to and fro…………………

Other Spots to visit on Mount Girnar are Bhimkund, Satpuda, Gaumukhi Ganga, Pathar chati, Bhairav Jap, Bharatvan Sheshavan, Hanumandhara and Jatashankar. I didnt had stamina to visit all these places in Girnar. They are all in the mountain circumference area.

Every year during the period of five days ending on the full moon day of Kartik month, a circular excursion to mount girnar (Parikrama) is held. Lacs of people take part in it. It goes from Bhavnath Temple to Jina Bawa Ni Madhi, Hanuman Dhara, Malvela, Bordevi and return to Bhavnath Temple. It is a foot way of about 40 Kms.

Total Girnar climb  :- Climb up Jain Temples 4500 steps , Then climb up 1500 steps to Amba Mata temple total 6000 steps up, then climb horizontally down around 50 steps and then climb up  around 150 to 200 steps and about 1 km away is Guru Gorakhnath temple . Finally ( this is the most difficult part) 2000 steps down and then again 1800 steps climb up to Lord Dattatreya( Total 9999 steps marked ) ……………………

Anyway its time to stop here . I will come with Lord Somnath in next one soon………………………

Offf… you made us tired with your lively narration. If you once go to Himalayas, then this much cold, this much height and this much climbing will look like a child’s play to you.

    • Thank you Mr. SilentSoul for your lovely comments……………..

And yaa i want to go Himalayas and that too not once , many times ……………………….

This was just a little bit practice…………………………

  4. Ashu says:

The images are soothing. Great clicks. Would have been a wonderful experience.

  5. Mukesh Bhalse says:

    Wow Vishal,
Once again a great post. Really the climb seems to be extremely tiresome and monotonous, but then if it is the matter of having view of almighty, everything is fair. Waiting for your next post.

    Thanks.

  6. Nandan says:

I am in agreement with SS on the Himalaya part and with Sandeep on ‘China Wall’ part :-). I got the same thought.

Did the pain re-surface the next morning ?

Where do we go next ?

  7. Dear Nandan,

Pain was diminished by 80 -85 % as soon as we had oil and balm massage downstairs from local experienced people there. fantastic massage at 30 rupees and its must after climbing down . you will feel relaxed and fresh post massage……………

But next 7 to 8 days the pain will continue…………

Whenever you plan for Girnar climb Keep it in last otherwise there are lot of chances that tour might get affected…………..

Next we are going to Aadi jyotirlinga Lord Somnath ………………….

  8. ashok sharma says:

    good pics

  9. D.L.Narayan says:

Thanks of the tour of Girnar, Vishal.

When I saw the picture captioned “Ready to start over again” I thought that it was the Great Wall of China in the background, only a miniature version of it.

When visiting such places, one becomes acutely aware of the level of one’s physical fitness. I am sure that the winners of the annual Girnar climbing race must be doli bearers, lol. 50 minutes is truly amazing. The record holder must be a seasoned marathon runner, for sure.

  10. Yaa it seems a miniature version of great wall of China , when looked through pics…………….

I don’t know whether they are Doli bearers or not , but definately locals of Junagadh who must be practicising for the race…………………………..

When I was climbing Girnar I didn’t believe about 50 minutes to go to up , but yaa it was true.

When i was down i inquired about it and was true. Amazing…………………………….

  11. Neeraj Jat says:

  13. While reading this and earlier part of your story, you manage to keep the suspense whether you have complete the journey or stop in middle. Nice narration. I have also do a almost similar but shorter journey for Shiv Temple at Chauragarh, Pachmarhi. I think there were around 1300 stairs.

    • Thanks Solanky jee,

But really whenever i took break , thoughts of going back were already coming in mind……….

It was bhole baba ‘s ashirwad that i completed it………………

  14. Nayan Bhatt says:

Avdhoot Chintan Shri Gurudev Datt. I felt that I have once again been blessed by the yatra.

  16. Tarun Talwar says:

    Dear Vishal,

The faith in the Lord and the sheer will to conquer always surmounts the physical difficulties. Congratulations on successfully completing the Girnar trip. Thanks for sharing.

  17. Thanks Tarun ………………….

Yaa it was my faith and lord wish to give me darshan , thats is why it happened otherwise at that time i was overweight around 87 kgs. It was impossible for person like me to climb………………..

I was feeling negative on 800 steps itself……………

  18. nitin says:

very nice description and photos…. very useful info from the ground …

did u see many ppl could carry their kids (1 or 2 yr olds) themslevevs or they had to rely on doli/godi for the kids??

  19. Dear Nitin ,Thanks for your comments

    No not at all………………

You cannot carry the child up on your godi. Climbing Girnar for oneself is diffcult, then with kids on godi is impossible.

Yes there are many locals who can carry your child up along with you in their godi. They charge around Rs. 800 till , you can still negotiate upto Rs. 400 – 600.

But two things to remember here

    1) whether the child is ready to be there in the godi till you reach top.

    2) You have always keep a watch on that person who is carrying you child, that he does not leave away from your group ( missing)…

    Ok………..
