Interesting read. Im planning to take my teenage niece there tommorrow as early as possible and was actually searching for ferry timings from the Gateway, when I came across your article, the best so far, except that I am none the wiser about ferry timings. Will revert after getting back.

Manish,
Well, to be frank there are very few attractions for going up. The canon, the hiking if you like and a scenic view of sea, island, ships with Mumbai in the background.
The Portuguese must have thought that practice is more important than monuments. :)

Thanks for appreciating the pictures. Here you can see some more.

Thanks for letting us know more about the beautiful elephanta caves.

The pictures are very beautiful. Do you recommend going up from the first cave ? Apart from Canon I could not make out anything interesting up there, of course I am forgetting the monkeys to give you company.

Its surprising that the caves were used as target practice by Portugese. Generally Europeans were better than us in understanding the significance of these monuments.
